Oh my, this is a great batch. Went with chicken this year which really lets the complex layers of the different peppers come through. A little smoky, on the sweet side, w/enough heat to highlight but not overpower the flavor. #Chili #FoodSky 🌶️❤️🌶️

An orange ladle full of thick, delicious chicken chili that's just been scooped from the full stock pot below. I wish you could smell this photo.

It's Common Ground Fair weekend in #Maine, and you know what that means--the season's 1st batch of chili is underway! Here's a Before pic w/pepper IDs in alt text. #FoodSky #chili #MOGFA 🌶️🔥🤤🔥🌶️

A shallow 11" ceramic bowl sits on a grey deck railing on an overcast day. It's filled with a multitude of chili peppers in shades of green, orange and red. This year's bounty:

-Poblanos and green & red jalapenos
-One or two Anaheims might have snuck in?
-Kashmiri (mild flavor & heat)
-Chile de Arbol (smoky flavor, hot, used in Cholula)
-Calabrian (sweeter w/smoky undertones, mild to medium heat)
-Pequins (flavorful, also used in Cholula, brings some heat)
-Aji Limon (bright yellow, citrus undertone, med heat)
-Habaneros (orange, hot hot hot)
-Paper Lanterns and Scotch Bonnets (habanero heat but a bit sweeter)
-Cherry (jalapeno-esque heat)

Found at the booths for Nettie Fox Farm and the new-to-the Fair Spice Hounds!

At the end of a long day near the end of a long week, a real treat to find this waiting in my mailbox. Perfect reading for the nor'easter this weekend! 📚💙 cc: @dj-acid-reflux.bsky.social

The cover of the paperback novel 'Everything Will Swallow You' by Tom Cox. A linocut-style image of great vertical cliffs like ramparts under a blue sky, with reddish hills rolling down from the right (a sturdy 2-story white house w/2 chimneys nestles between two of the hills). At left, a dark sea rolls in toward a single silhouetted figure standing on the strand between it and the hills.

The author's name (Tom Cox) and the title are in all-caps print on the wall-like cliffs over the scene below.

It had been an oddly warm day in Central Maine, the wind gusting humid & insistent all afternoon, when the cloud T-rex surfaced above the treeline.

A pale blue early evening sky, framed by dark backlit trees at left and bottom and the forbidding peak of a dark house at right. Behind the trees, a t-rex shaped cloud emerges, just the chest and neck, with its giant mouth open and ready to chomp down on the roof of the house. A short pink-lit cloud arm reaches forward behind the scrim of leaves and branches.

I've been seized with an urge to draw barnacle geese after seeing The Wild Robot (which I enjoyed very much), and remembered that I drew this in 2014 after seeing a documentary about how barnacle goslings have to simply hurl themselves off their cliff nests to join their parents at ground level.

Single-panel comic drawn in black ink of a pair of barnacle goose parents at the bottom of a cliff, regarding their dazed and confused gosling, who looks up at them with a plaintive 'why??'

Today I've learned that Dolly Parton gave Black high schools band uniforms and wrote Eminem a nice letter when he was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame

Marshall (Eminem), Congratulations on your induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Your performance was amazing and everybody said so. Even though I don't know a lot about rap music, I've come to know that you are the very best at it. Aside from that I hope what I have to say will not seem weird or strange to you but I have always felt some unexplained connection to you like I know you somehow. I had hoped to
meet you at the show but you know how nuts those things are, personally I hate 'em and I missed my chance but maybe someday we'll meet. In the meantime, keep doing what you're doing because you do it so well and no matter how complex your world may be just know you are very special and touch people in
ways you don't even know.
With love & respect,
Dolly Parton

@devintoshea.bsky.social I was sad to learn "The Veiled Prophet" wasn't available in my library's network. Put in a request for them to purchase it; today got the notif & picked up this brand new copy! Will be spending my weekend with it. 📚 #booksky #libraries 💖

A hardback library copy of the nonfiction book 'The Veiled Prophet: Secret Societies, White Supremacy, and the Struggle for St. Louis' by Devin Thomas O'Shea. The cover is yellow, with a black and white photo of one of the former veiled prophets and his consort, his face covered by a thick lace veil and a white mask over his eyes, her eyes covered by a black privacy bar. Both wear ornate clothes, him with white gloves (there's no way to tell his identity).

If you grew up St. Louis-adjacent you know about the VP Fair. If you didn't, this is a good place to start learning.
