All of @devintoshea.bsky.social ‘s “Veiled Prophet” is very self-aware about the fact that this is a story about America in 2026 but this part really spoke to me

Those few, of course, will always end up betraying their foot sol-diers, administrators, and allies. The Klansmen of the 1860s did not become the millionaires of the Gilded Age; the Democratic toughs did not live peaceful lives in the afterglow of political violence; the American Bundists did not win the war, and if they had, they'd have been shot in ditches as their superior officers consolidated power.
Members of the White Citizens Council died out, and had their neighborhoods sold to private equity; the most violent street fascists of today will be thrown to the dogs as soon as they lose their use-fulness. As Thomas Pynchon puts it at the end of Shadow Ticket,
"Hitler-happy adolescents," those grinning faces "imagining themselves predators but when observed more closely, fated after all to suffer, to be brought down as prey, even as the hands of those they thought were brothers in a struggle for which them themselves were always too fragile."27

Really enjoying @devintoshea.bsky.social 's Veiled Prophet book. This is a great micro/macro book- I learned a lot about the history of St. Louis, but also a ton about the broader history of money and power in the US. Very readable because the whole story is completely insane!!!

when i worked at sbux in high school they kept scheduling me for like 35 hours a week and i kept saying i can't work this schedule i have to go to school. turned out they were hugely overscheduling kids to avoid giving enough hours to the adults that they would've qualified for health insurance
