Think tanks will soon start releasing non-peer-reviewed modeling of how the permitting bill might affect pollution, if they haven't already. Most will secretly have lots of ideology-driven thumbs on scales. One big way to tip the scales is by ignoring pollution associated with oil and gas exports.

I'm talking about *fiscal* debt: the solar we didn't build, the carbon we emitted instead; the rail we didn't build, the wildly inefficient aviation we substituted; the walkable, livable, transit-oriented cities we didn't build, the car-choked disasters we built instead.

Here's a funny thing about the right to vote: it wasn't won by voting.
Two suffragists in period dress, ceremonially putting ballots into a ballot box. The background has been replaced with an elaborate collage of 19th C printing-press parts. The ballots are glowing with radiant spikes. The face of the ballot box has been replaced with an Nvidia Vera Lynn GPU.

Excellent, sensible, and welcome thoughts from @rephuffman.bsky.social, ranking member of the House Committee on Natural Resources, on the Senate permitting deal.
My thoughts on the Senate's permitting reform bill:

Passing a good permitting reform package will be one of my top priorities for the next Congress, so I'm very interested in these Senate negotiations.

From what I've seen, Senators Whitehouse and Heinrich have done some good work, but they've been negotiating from a position of weakness and the tentative deal unveiled today raises significant questions and concerns that would have to be resolved before most Democrats could support it.

I'm all for streamlining transmission and clean energy buildout, but the threshold requirement before making major policy concessions is to actually end Trump's war on renewables so that hundreds of bottled-up clean energy projects can bring that affordable power to the grid. Further, we can't throw states, tribes, impacted communities, and threatened and endangered wildlife under the bus. And as we streamline and cut red tape, we must make sure the American people — not just powerful corporate interests — have a say in government decisions about what happens to our air, water, and public lands. That's what serious, responsible permitting reform looks like. There's a way to get there, and parts of this deal are helpful, but some of it concedes too much. Hollowing out the Endangered Species Act through the delegation of authority and problematic definitions, for example, is so extreme that a milder version of it spooked several House Republicans off of Bruce Westerman's ESA bill earlier this year, so you can imagine how it's going to land with the American people who overwhelmingly support protecting wildlife. And the provisions that seek to guarantee fair treatment for wind, solar, and battery storage are novel, untested, and don't really end the war on clean energy, but they will still trigger cries of "Green New Deal" and fierce opposition from the House Freedom Caucus, clouding any path to pass this deal through the House unless it gets much worse. And knowing the GOP players, that's exactly what will happen if this bill advances in the lame duck.

The bottom line for me, and I believe most Democrats, is that November 3rd is coming and we are likely to soon have a far better negotiating position. Folding our hand now or in the lame duck makes no sense when we can keep working on this and, in a few more months, have a much better deal that works for everyone.

Can anyone explain to me why a national permitting deal is best negotiated now, mere weeks from an election that is likely to reshape federal power? Let’s stipulate that a deal of some kind is necessary and good; my question is what about the situation makes now more desirable than, say, Q1 2027?

Senator @heinrich.senate.gov is making a grave mistake negotiating w/Trump & MAGA on “permitting reform.” If a deal is cut, it’ll bulldoze a path for AI data centers & fossil fuels, harming beloved landscapes such as Greater Chaco. And Heinrich will be responsible. I do not say this lightly.

Btw while I have your attention on diet and climate, “eat local” also isn’t a real climate strategy either. To reduce climate impact: 1. Minimize your food waste 2. Eat more plants and less animal-based foods (esp beef and lamb) 3. Everything else matters a lot less (so eat what you like)
ourworldindata.org
You want to reduce the carbon footprint of your food? Focus on what you eat, not whether your food is local
“Eat local” is a common recommendation to reduce your diet's carbon footprint. How does the impact of what you eat compare to where it comes from?

Here’s the opinion: storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.us... “The empty invocation of national security is not a blank check to punish and retaliate against government critics.”
The undisputed record shows that the challenged actions constituted unlawful retaliation in violation of the First Amendment, and that Anthropic was denied the pre-deprivation process required under the Fifth Amendment. The record further shows no material dispute that
Secretary Hegseth's decision to designate Anthropic a supply chain risk violated the governing statutory scheme, 10 U.S.C. § 3252, and was arbitrary and capricious. Though the Department
of War is undisputedly free to select the Al vendor of its choice, the evidence demonstrates that the broad measures imposed on Anthropic were illegal and baseless. Summary judgment is granted in Anthropic's favor on all claims, except for the ultra vires separation of powers claim and certain claims concerning Agency Defendants who undisputedly did not take any relevant
action or who took only interim measures, on which judgment is entered in Defendants' favor. The empty invocation of national security is not a blank check to punish and retaliate against government critics.
