“It’s not ALL men.” None of the 50+ men the Cornell rapists invited to come join them in raping a woman they’d drugged went to the authorities or tried to stop it. Not all men would rape an unconscious woman, but where are the men who’d try to stop it, or EVEN FUCKING OBJECT?

It’s really striking the extent to which you can divide opinion columnists into two camps, (one tiny, one huge) with the question: do you want people to thrive and flourish, or simply behave in a way you approve of?

“I am a mosaic of everyone I’ve ever loved…” 🥰
smokeinsilence:
have you ever noticed you pick up little habits and phrases from the people you love? it's no wonder our hearts are so easily broken when people leave. we become a reflection of the people that we care about and those personality traits stick with us even if the people don't
viridianmasquerade:
I make my ramen the way a friend taught me in eleventh grade.
Every fall, I listen to a playlist made for me by a boy I drove across a border to hook up with. I eat sushi because a girl who won't talk to me anymore made me try it, and Indian food because my best friend's parents ordered for me before I knew what I liked. There are movies I love because someone I loved loved them first. I am a mosaic of everyone l've ever loved, even for a heartbeat.

A problem I have about the pervasiveness of GenAI outside of the basic ethical nonstarters is that I… I don’t want to live in a world where I have to doubt, scrutinize or investigate everything I see that isn’t happening right in front of me. I find it horrible, exhausting & time consuming.

Politicians only talk about "hard working families" so when your ability to work and entitlement to family life is ripped away from you by a cult of bigots, you become marginalised no matter what. The contradiction of GCs raising grievance when they got what they wanted is a feature not a bug.

If Hugo continues to grow at this rate, by 2030 he will no longer fit in the barn. By 2050 he will have grown to the size of Godzilla and could crush humanity. But if we let the Chinese grow their own Hugo first that would be bad. This is why we must invest 100 trillion dollars in Hugo immediately.

90 years ago, Parliament responded to the rise of Oswald Mosley's Blackshirts by passing the Public Order Act, which banned political uniforms, private militias and the threat of force for political objects. The debates make very resonant reading today. Here's the Liberal Robert Bernays. (Short 🧵)
You cannot conduct a fair match when one side is playing with a ball and the other with bombs and, if democracy is to survive, it must be conducted according to definite and recognised rule. One of them is that no political party should resort to any weapon other than reason and argument. The introduction of private armies, as I see it, strikes at the root of democracy. I know it is contended that the Blackshirts are not armed and, therefore, are not an army, but I do not think that argument can be upheld. … Uniformed men in military formation suggest, and are meant to suggest, the idea of force. It is no argument to reply that at this or that demonstration no force is intended. It is an inescapable fact that a uniform in politics symbolises force, to be used either now or in the future.

Hard not to regard this as a classic example of a pre-emptive campaign by certain sectors, along with their media sympathisers, to discourage a new prime minister from appointing someone who might damage their interests in the long and short term. And it will almost certainly work.

a compromise: if you are a social media site/communication app, you are not responsible for what people post, *provided* you don’t interfere with what they see. so, the bsky timeline, basically: posts you’ve chosen to follow in chronological order. put other posts in there, and you’re a publisher.

The story we’re expected to believe is that at the very end of the Brown government, ministers drafted an aggressive bathroom ban, utterly at odds with both our international commitments, EU caselaw, and the trans inclusive GRA they had passed 6 years previously. Unfortunately, no one else noticed that’s what the law said. And because they never bothered to point it out, it remained unenforced for a decade and a half. During which time the British government would issue travel advisories to American states who have passed similar bans and Labour MPs would declare them “malicious” and confidently state that such a thing would “never be passed in the UK.” Then, in the year of our lord 2025, our Supreme Court uncovered the truth: we had in fact had such a ban on the books the whole time!

Literally every defence I see of parliament's drinking culture has brain doing this meme.
"Okay. But that's worse." Good place meme.

The image is in two halves, both of which show a frame from The Good Place with Chidi talking to Eleanor. In the top half the subtitles say "Okay. But that's worse." In the bottom half the subtitles are "You do get how that's worse, right?".

The cultural blindness around Milton Keynes (vibrant economy, exc cycling infrastructure, lots of green space and water parks, actually quite a nice place to live and quite wealthy too) is part of a general malaise wherein policy seems directed at a UK as people wish it were, rather than as it is.
