Who knew livestock husbandry is a specialized set of knowledge and skills and most places have bodies of law that vary because it's one of the first things people write laws about? (Answer: people who actually have done it, rather than academics just starting on it as a retirement project.)

Someone asked me to sign one of these petitions at the grocery store. The description they gave to me of what the measure did and the description on the sheet were misleadingly different.

Saying the war "never would have happened" if Donald Trump was president is not only a lie, it's possible that by signaling that the US was weak on Ukraine--by demonstrating that a president could illicitly halt aid, and that our government wouldn't actually hold him accountable--he helped cause it.

This article offers half a dozen reasons why people have stopped having friends and family over, but it ignores the fact that the women who planned parties and kept homes tidy enough for unplanned guests are now working for pay full-time (usually more than 9-5). www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle...

The dreadful decline of hosting at home: ‘I feel shame any time a friend comes over’
It used to be quite normal to pop next door for a coffee or invite friends over for dinner. But not any more. What’s behind this change – and just how damaging is it?

This is Nazi rhetoric, full stop. It's not only a call to instigate a race war in the United States, but it's reminiscent of historic European justifications used to incite pogroms against Jews. People who say things like this are incredibly dangerous, as there is nothing they won't eventually do.

It's worth noting that the decision to kill him by firing squad - chosen for its symbolism, according to Hegseth - gets the symbolism entirely backwards. For example: we hung the Nazis convicted at Nuremburg, instead of giving them the death by firing squad they would have preferred.

Picture of hands changing a smoke alarm battery. The text reads: In brightest day. In blackest night. I shall sound with all my might. When there's a fire or when my battery is dead if you forgot to change it. Which you did. Good morning, it's 3AM. Smoke alarms chirp all night! Check the expiration dates on your smoke alarms. Test the batteries. Oath optional.

It's Banned Books Week. My fellow librarians, listen carefully: your book displays should be almost exclusively writers who are alive. Yes, I know classic literature is also being banned, but most of those authors are dead. They aren't suffering financially from bans and challenges.

One of the biggest myths is that men rape by mistake. Like, "Oh, they need consent training." But research is very clear: Sexual violence is not a mistake. It is an intentionally made decision by people who know they don't have consent. They just don't prioritize consent over things like status, power, domination, and sexual gratification.
For my research, I got a certificate of confidentiality from the National Institutes of Health, so my notes couldn't be subpoenaed. One of the reasons I call them perpetrators in my work is because every single person I interviewed confessed in that context. The first question I would ask them was, "When you received that email from Title IX that you were under investigation, did you know what it was about?" Every perpetrator I interviewed said "yes." If sexual assault were a miscommunication, you would be wondering, What have I possibly done wrong? That is not the way that any of them reacted because they knew.

Wow. I was so worried that I'd somehow mess it up, even doing everything as instructed. The knowledge that I didn't want to do this again anytime soon was enough to stave off any thought of solid food. (Though the 'six hours without even water' was worse than 'liquids only the day before'.)

If I program a robot to create a car using patented material, I am legally liable; patents specifically prohibit this to give the patent-holder time to profit from their invention. If I program a computer to create a book using copyrighted material, I am legally liable, for the same reason.

RHG and his ilk's response will be to do some racecraft, insisting that these are Berbers and thus not really racially Black (while ignoring the ample evidence for dark-skinned Romans) and/or to just botch the chronology and claim that this was part of Roman decline.
