I've heard people make claims that AI would lead to a new Renaissance, but I didn't imagine it'd happen like this:
Screenshot of a Tweet from Pope Leo XIV. It reads:

"In this era of artificial intelligence, it is becoming urgen to distinguish human art from what machines produce. There is an ontological difference, even before an aesthetic one, between art and what a machine can generate through statistical calculation based on millions of images created by others. Algorithms lack the spark of humanity. For this reason, the Church wishes to renew an alliance with artists and cultural institutions to safeguard our humanity."

Fungal biofilm formation has long been considered an important virulence trait. Shannon Esher Righi explores a new @PLOSBiology.org study challenging this idea in Candida parapsilosis outbreak isolates. 🧪 #AcademicSky #microbiology #fungi Article plos.io/4dh0tJx Primer plos.io/4hto2QF
Conceptual diagram for the trade-off between biofilm production and in vivo persistence.
Biofilm production facilitates colonization of commensal organisms, promotes adherence, and confers intrinsic antifungal resistance. Biofilm-producing strains are under tight transcriptional control and expose β-glucan. This leads to increased phagocytosis and killing by macrophages, and extracellular NET production by neutrophils. By contrast, Daneshnia and colleagues, show that low biofilm-producing strains undergo transcriptional reprogramming to allow for metabolic flexibility. They mask their β-glucan to facilitate immune avoidance, leading to decreased phagocytosis by macrophages. However, when phagocytosed, low biofilm-producing strains are more fit for growth and survival within immune cell-rich niches of the host, leading to enhanced macrophage activation and neutrophil swarming. Together these features allow low biofilm-producing C. parapsilosis strains to survive and persist within the in vivo host environment.

Eels' slipperiness is the basis for the some of our oldest eel metaphors. In the 5th C. BCE, the Greek poet Simonides wrote that a slippery character -- say, like, a politician who is running for office to avoid prison -- is “like an eel down in the slime." And that's bad. 🗃️🧪
Meme. Colored medieval drawing of Simonides. You can tell it's him because his name is written above his head. Otherwise you might not know, because he is dressed very much like a medieval merchant. He is wearing a big maroon hat with a green band, and an orange cloak over a stylish black and yellow shirt. His yellow hair is long and flowing, and he is holding a book in his lap in his right hand. His face is lined with care or worry, and he is looking somewhere off to your left. He is not paying attention to you at all, really.

His thumb is holding his place in the middle of his book, and he looks like he's been interrupted in the middle of reading by some semi-distant disturbance. As if, somewhere off to your left, there is a bear trying to get onto a bus. The bear is apologetically looking for change to pay the fare, but everyone else is freaking out. Simonides is considering this scene, and writing a poem about it in his head.

Meme text reads:
"My best poetry
is eeligiac poetry"

Mounting an #immune response is energetically costly, and so host defenses are often influenced by internal metabolic states. This study identifies a gut-brain signaling mechanism in C. elegans, shaping pathogen avoidance and molecular immune responses. 🧪 #AcademicSky #hostPathogen plos.io/3T9f6bi
Conceptual diagram for how NHR-68 integrates lipid metabolism with behavioral and molecular immunity.
NHR-68 acts in the intestine to regulate linoleic acid homeostasis through control of fat-3 expression. Changes in intestinal lipid metabolism influence an AWC-dependent pathogen-avoidance circuit through currently unidentified intestine-to-neuron signaling mechanisms, enhancing survival during P. aeruginosa infection. In parallel, NHR-68 suppresses PMK-1/p38 MAPK and DAF-16/FOXO immune pathways, coordinating behavioral and molecular defenses to optimize host protection. Created in BioRender. Sang, Y. (2026).

The cryo-EM structure of HIV-2 Vif with human APOBEC3H and CBFβ shows how Vif bypasses retrovirus immunity. A3H forms 2-part dimer linked by dsRNA, revealing key viral tactics. PMID:42373647, Nat Commun 2026, @NatureComms doi.org/10.1038/s41467-026-75045-1 #Medsky #Pharmsky #RNA #ASHG 🧪

The structural mechanism of HIV-2 Vif antagonism of human APOBEC3H | Nature Communications
Human APOBEC3 (A3) proteins restrict retrovirus infection by inducing hypermutations in viral cDNA. To counteract this restriction, lentiviruses, such as HIV-1 and HIV-2 encode the viral infectivity factor (Vif), which hijacks a host Cullin-RING E3 ubiquitin ligase complex to target A3 proteins for proteasomal degradation. Here, we present the cryo-EM structure of HIV-2 Vif in complex with human A3H and CBFβ. The structure reveals that A3H forms a dimer mediated by dsRNA where each A3H monomer directly interacts with an HIV-2 Vif and the host protein CBFβ. Both HIV-2 Vif-A3H and CBFβ-A3H interfaces are critical for A3H degradation. Notably, however, the HIV-2 Vif-A3H interface is entirely distinct from the previously determined cryo-EM structure of the HIV-1 Vif and A3H complex. These findings suggest that HIV-1 and HIV-2 Vif, which are the result of distinct cross-species transmissions from species with different A3H characteristics, have followed separate evolutionary trajectories to
