The Alaska #OceanAcidification Network is your place to learn about marine carbon dioxide removal #mCDR. 🧪🌊🦑 aoan.aoos.org
Marine Carbon Dioxide Removal
(mCDR) - An intro for Alaskans
Examples of proposed mCDR techniques
ALKALINITY ENHANCEMENT
Adding crushed minerals to or removing acid from seawater to help it absorb
more CO₂.
OCEAN FERTILIZATION
Adding nutrients, like iron, to encourage phytoplankton blooms that pull CO₂
from the atmosphere.
SEAWEED FARMING FOR CARBON STORAGE
Growing kelp or seaweed at large scales, then sinking it into deep ocean
areas, or creating durable goods to store the carbon it absorbed.
If successful, mCDR could provide benefits for Alaska’s marine ecosystems and coastal livelihoods. If done
irresponsibly, it could also result in environmental and economic risks and pose complex tradeoffs. There
is a need for coastal Alaskans to have a voice in shaping the emerging field.

October 1, 3:40pm AKDT seminar #AlaskaSky 🧪🌊🦑 What is Ocean Equity? with URI professor Dr. Ota @uafairbanks.bsky.social @tamamta.bsky.social @urigso.bsky.social
Flyer for a University of Alaska Fairbanks College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences seminar reads:

Please join us for a seminar with Dr. Yoshitaka Ota. Thursday, October 1st, 3:40-4:40pm (Alaska time). In-person in Anchorage 1007 W 3rd Ave, Suite 100 or watch parties in Fairbanks Troth Yeddha' O'Neill 201 and Juneau - Lena 101 or register in advance by Zoom

Title: What is Ocean Equity?

Abstract: Despite the development of various equity frameworks and indicators, there remain concerns about the potential for co-optation embedded in indicators and enablers that largely focus on equality while paying insufficient attention to power relations and the historical and systemic nature of ocean governance. The talk will argue that unpacking these systemic structures requires intentionally departing from conventional views of equity and engaging more deeply with social justice scholarship.

Our Gulf of Alaska #OceanAcidification buoy site has mostly observed below average sea surface temperatures in 2026 when compared to our full record. 🧪🌊🦑🛟 #GAKOA
Project
Mooring site GAKOA in the northern Gulf of Alaska is led by University of Alaska Fairbanks Ocean Acidification Research Center (UAF OARC) to observe seawater carbon dioxide to detect ocean acidification. All surface observations at GAKOA show a strong seasonal signal.

Figures
The top panel shows observations of the difference in the partial pressure of carbon dioxide (ΔpCO₂) between one meter above the sea-air interface and one meter below the sea-air interface. A negative value indicates the seawater pCO₂ is lower than air, and the site is a carbon dioxide sink to the atmosphere. Seawater carbon dioxide is consumed by phytoplankton during the summer, resulting in more negative ΔpCO₂ values.

The middle panel is surface seawater temperature (SST), observed by a seaCAT sensor moored one meter below the sea-air interface.

The bottom panel is surface seawater salinity (SSS), observed by a seaCAT sensor moored one meter below the sea-air interface.

The dark black line is the site average, the gray lines are the final and archived data from previous deployments (i.e., 2011-2025), and the blue dots are the 3-hour, raw data from the current deployment.

@alaskawx.bsky.social has the latest update on sea surface temperatures around Alaska. 🧪🌊🦑 #ACCAP alaskaclimate.substack.com/p/alaska-aug...
Globally, about 80 percent of the oceans had sea surface temperatures (SSTs) that were above the 1991-2020 baseline average in August. Close to Alaska, SSTs in the Gulf of Alaska were fairly evenly split between above and below normal, though the departures were not large (Fig. 4a) While the Bering Sea was also about split about 50-50 above/below normal, SSTs in the southeast Bering Sea, were significantly cooler than normal, as has been the case most of the summer. Parts of the area south and southwest of Nunivak Island, including around the Pribilof Islands, had a “top five” coolest August SST (since 1980). North of the Bering Strait, SSTs were mostly below normal due to late sea ice melt. However, along a narrow near-coastal strip on the western North Slope coast from Point Lay to Utqiaġvik, SSTs were significantly warmer than average.

The University of Alaska Fairbanks Ocean Acidification Research Center (UAF OARC) partners with EcoFOCI to add sensors to observe seawater carbon dioxide to detect ocean acidification at M2.

A positive value indicates the seawater pCO₂ is higher than air, and the site is a carbon dioxide source (shaded area) to the atmosphere. The bottom panel is seawater temperature, observed by a seaCAT sensor moored one meter below the sea-air interface. The dark black line is the site average, the gray lines are the final and archived data from previous deployments (i.e. 2011-2025), and the blue dots are the 3-hour, raw data from the current deployment. All 2026 data are preliminary.

2026
At the time M2 was deployed on May 7, 2026, the spring bloom had begun and ΔpCO₂ was -240 μatm. The surface buoy was recovered on August 11, 2026, and the seasonal drawdown associated with primary productivity was lessening and ΔpCO₂ was returning to near zero (when the seawater pCO₂ and atmospheric pCO₂ are in equilibrium). Overall, seawater temperatures were below average, with seawater at 0.3 degree C at the time of deployment. The 2025-2026 winter was a relatively high sea ice year, relative to the last decade.
