"In other words, the people who are the most 'polarized' in the U.S. electorate are those who are racist and sexist, and those who oppose racists and sexists."
Screenshot of article which reads: These numbers are relatively similar between Democrats and Repub-
licans, which often leads political pundits to claim this is more evidence
of “polarization,” and that both sides are equally to blame. However,
a closer look tells a more interesting story. The people who are most
likely to vilify and dehumanize their partisan opponents are Republicans
who are high in racism and sexism and Democrats who oppose racism
and sexism. The people who are least likely to vilify and dehumanize
their political opponents are Republicans who are low in racism and sex-
ism. One explanation for these patterns is that those Republicans who
are racist and sexist vilify and dehumanize Democrats because they see
the Democratic Party as a party of racial minorities and women; and
Democrats who score low in racism and sexism will vilify and dehu-
manize Republicans because they consider Republicans to be racist and
sexist. In other words, the people who are the most “polarized” in the
U.S. electorate are those who are racist and sexist, and those who op-
pose racists and sexists.

I would just like to note that the Allies started winning WW2 when they moved from naming their tanks after racist Confederate loser traitors (Stuart, Lee) to naming them after righteous Union winners (Sherman). The British caught on to this earlier, renamed the Lee the Grant, and never looked back.

The tortuous, botched execution of Christa Pike is truly horrifying. And while it feels unique in some ways, in reality it is also only the latest in a history of botched executions going back years — YEARS — in numerous states. Please know: this is the reality of the death penalty in this country.

For me, the hardest thing about stories like the Cornell gang rape case isn’t reading the initial details—although that is hard. What’s even harder is when men online, especially the journalists and pundits, start trying to combat the feminist outrage by purposefully seeding doubt and victim-blaming

Nick Beckstead, noted longtermist and "effective altruist,” just comes out and says it: "But it now seems more plausible to me that saving a life in a rich country is substantially more important than saving a life in a poor country, other things being equal."
This is precisely why Nick Beckstead, a noted EA, argued in 2013 that, given the "overwhelming" moral importance of the far future - "millions, billions, and trillions" of years from now - we should prioritize saving the lives of people in rich countries over those in poor countries, other things being equal. The reason is that people in rich countries are better positioned to influence the far future.

To take another example, saving lives in poor countries may have significantly smaller ripple effects

than saving and improving lives in rich countries. Why? Richer countries have substantially more

innovation, and their workers are much more economically productive. By ordinary standards at

least by ordinary enlightened humanitarian standards saving and improving lives in rich countries

is about equally as important as saving and improving lives in poor countries, provided lives are

improved by roughly comparable amounts. But it now seems more plausible to me that saving a life

in a rich country is substantially more important than saving a life in a poor country, other things
being equal.
Screenshot from Beckstead's 2013 PhD dissertation, regarded as one of the founding documents of longtermism, one of the main cause areas of EA.

6th Cir. holds that Michigan judge who reacted to a student falling asleep during a program in his courtroom by ordering her handcuffed, detained, and then put through a mock trial streamed on YouTube is not shielded by judicial immunity. www.opn.ca6.uscourts.gov/opinions.pdf...
Here, Till has put forth sufficient allegations to show that Judge King’s actions did not further an “official act or sanction,” see id., but rather related to Judge King’s “private interests,” see Barnes, 105 F.3d at 1119. Indeed, Till alleges that Judge King had ELG locked in a “holding cell” and conducted a “phony mock trial” only because Judge King was offended by ELG nodding off while he was lecturing about his career as a lawyer. And Judge King is alleged to have “admitted to the press” that he was simply intending to “scare” ELG because she had “disrespect[ed]” him. Till also alleges that there is no case number, order, or any other court record associated with the events that transpired. This matters because the existence of a court record or order indicates that a judge’s actions constituted judicial acts. See Stump, 435 U.S. at 360–61 (explaining that a judge was entitled to judicial immunity despite procedural deficiencies because the judge “took cognizance” of his actions by signing a petition and “act[ing] upon it” (quoting In re Summers, 325 U.S. 561, 567 (1945))). The absence of such an order or record here therefore suggests the opposite—that Judge King’s actions were nonjudicial.
