This is in response to the stay of execution of Christa Pike in TN. In Glossip v Gross, Justice Roberts cited human rights law studies on the impact of time with the certainty of death and those last moments - gubernatorial pardons, SCOTUS decisions - that would allow to contemplate life. Torture.

A peaceful bloc of residents sitting on the road across the street from where they actually live and pouring each other cups of tea is more investigated, and on a larger scale (a scale of what?) than perpetrators of actual pogroms for 3 years running.

I still have a lot of “but why don’t the residents let the Order march?” Well, because they remember. A community activist from Ardoyne I won’t name, but goes under Belfast.jpeg, has compiled some of the stories. There are 21 deaths total linked to the Drumcree “dispute”.

There are a lot of people I want to hear from on the rule of law - its idea, its practice, its enforcement, its future. There are so many, worldwide, committed to defending it, often at considerable personal and professional expense. And then there’s the Portadown LOL.
In a social media post, Portadown District said the rule of law has been “hugely damaged” and that faith in the law “continues to erode”.

A few days ago, I had shared a post by the Justice Minister, Naomi Long, saying that her thoughts were, at the early days of the stand-off, with the police. Not with anyone else. In this post, she appeals to the Order, claiming they are for “the greater good” (sic) and* condemns the residents*.

Is there a reason for the Secretary of State not to come to the Garvaghy Road? If an independent mediator is to be decided by the British government, why doesn’t he come here and report back? Leadership will mean being on the ground. As usual, no one considers it worth it. Residents deserve better

Much commentary is made by people who find this a normal and acceptable consequence of what they’ve somehow decided was a choice. It baffles me that some of those people are children, and would want them safe, too, and would mourn them, too. As Baldwin said, all children are our children

That’s it. There was no stand off, somehow, during the pogroms. There were no attempt at policing. There were not that many calls for the enforcement of the law. There were no announcement made that this was unlawful. But again, we all know where Lockhart was

And to be clear - this was a standoff, one that shouldn’t have happened, one that lasted too long, but there was no confrontation, and no violence. We can attribute that to the resolve of the GRRC and the support of everyone who was on the road. Where was this call for help during the pogroms?

Important point: the residents are those of the Garvaghy Road, not Portadown as a whole. They are perfectly content letting the Order march anywhere else. Just not there, and for good reason. I don’t think it is an unreasonable demand on the part of the residents to just ask to move a tiny bit.
