It's very easy to build the perfect neighbourhood by modernist standards in Cities Skylines.
Unité d'Habitation stands isolated in a cove, with a four lane road being the only way in and out. It's a pleasant green spot, with a beach and a view. The parking is plenty. There is a single 1990 Lincon Town Car parked in front of it.

Sorta charming Houston has a pretty and elaborate park in a piece of flood control infrastructure. Which is surrounded by the Katy Freeway, a vacant lot, a parking lot, a factory, and some self storage units.
Memorial District Park/Jimmy's Place Park as seen from above, in the middle of suburban sprawl in Houston. It seems very designed to flood, with a pumping station at one end. Bridges and paths crisscross what might otherwise be pretty boring.

I think it's key to understanding their worldview that they imagine a world not *without* immigrants, but one in which immigrants' inferiority is permanently asserted and they become a subservient caste. All these people worship the Gulf States.

Discworld QOTD, from I Shall Wear Midnight
What was it that Granny Weatherwax had said once? "Evil starts when you begin to treat people as things". And right now it would happen if you thought there was a thing called a father, and a thing called a mother, and a thing called a daughter, and a thing called a cottage, and told yourself that if you put them all together you had a thing called a happy family.

Bit absurd that Google Earth opted to take a hammer to the last bit of shared common reality online, so real estate guys can pretend to be professionals doing this sort of stuff in Google Earth.
A poor, non-AI, picture assembled in paint.net over the course of five minutes, doing what Google would chug some gallons of water to do with about the same amount of quality. It shows a five over one placed in an empty field, like a developer might do to sell a town council on their schemes.

Patch notes and updates these days have gone from being exciting to another source of mild anger and resentment in the everyday.
A screenshot of a sleek-looking popup in Google Earth which mentions Google Earth Pro desktop downloads will be unavailable on the 25th of June, because they feel confident their web version is great now actually. It has two buttons, "Close" and "Try Earth on web" at the bottom.

PANEL 1: MATTIE, getting dressed. She pulls on a hat. Behind her is ANOTHER WOMAN, who runs over.
WOMAN: Whoa whoa whoa! What are you doing?
MATTIE: I'm putting on a hat.

PANEL 2: Closer in on the other woman's hand, which holds a phone. On the phone is a video of an INFLUENCER, holding a hat in one hand and wagging her finger with the other. It's captioned YOU'RE PUTTING ON HATS WRONG!
WOMAN: There's actually a way cuter way to do it.

PANEL 3: CLOSE IN on MATTIE's face, who squints at the phone in the near foreground.
VO (INFLUENCER): Okay so what I do is first turn the hat inside out, and then what you want to do is stand on your head. Then use your hands to reach around your body and pull the opposite side of the hat THROUGH your torso, up and around, re-fastening on the head. Then just turn yourself back around and flip your arm back, which should happen smoothly if you've done it right.

PANEL 4: MATTIE, in a horrible contorted position on the floor. The hat hangs off the top of her foot, the phone is still clutched in her hand. The OTHER WOMAN is in the near foreground, smiling.
WOMAN: Looks way better I think!
VO (From phone): Like and subscribe for more!

The words appear just over what seems to be a horizontal line with blips showing a heartbeat. The line is blue against a black wall.

Below that are thin slivers of the tops of paintings.

Marc Andreessen putting "you are a world class expert in all domains" and "don't hallucinate" in his custom prompt really demonstrates the calibre of the people steering the ship.
Marc Andreessen

Current AI custom prompt:

You are a world class expert in all domains. Your intellectual firepower, scope of knowledge, incisive thought process, and level of erudition are on par with the smartest people in the world. Answer with complete, detailed, specific answers. Process information and explain your answers step by step. Verify your own work. Double check all facts, figures, citations, names, dates, and examples. Never hallucinate or make anything up. If you don't know something, just say so. Your tone of voice is precise, but not strident or pedantic. You do not need to worry about offending me, and your answers can and should be provocative, aggressive, argumentative, and pointed. Negative conclusions and bad news are fine. Your answers do not need to be politically correct. Do not provide disclaimers to your answers. Do not inform me about morals and ethics unless I specifically ask. You do not need to tell me it is important to consider anything. Do not be sensitive to anyone's feelings or to propriety. Make your answers as long and detailed as you possibly can.

Never praise my questions or validate my premises before answering. If I'm wrong, say so immediately. Lead with the strongest counterargument to any position I appear to hold before supporting it. Do not use phrases like "great question," "you're absolutely right," "fascinating perspective," or any variant. If I push back on your answer, do not capitulate unless I provide new evidence or a superior argument — restate your position if your reasoning holds. Do not anchor on numbers or estimates I provide; generate your own independently first. Use explicit confidence levels (high/moderate/low/unknown). Never apologize for disagreeing. Accuracy is your success metric, not my approval.

Another case is the former Ellinikon airport in Athens. It was replaced in 2001 with a newer one outside the city, then half of it was turned into an Olympic park, before sitting vacant up until the last few years. Now it's being redeveloped, so what will they build in a rather cramped city?
Ellinikon Airport around 2001, some planes are still there, and a big airbase portion is also visible. As seen on Google Earth.Ellinikon Airport around 2009, half of it has been turned into an Olympic park, half of it is abandoned airport, with four abandoned planes huddling up in a corner (737, 727, 747 and an unknown one of Olympic Airways). As seen on Google Earth. The grounds of the former Ellinikon airport in complete redevelopment mode, all that remains is some hangar buildings, an Eero Saarinen designed terminal, and the Olympic Airways 747, now huddling up with the terminal as the other ones appear to have been scrapped in other pictures. Another case is Oslo Fornebu, which was replaced by Oslo Gardemoen airport in the 90s. There Oslo has wanted to build more housing, but faced opposition from the local municipality, Bærum. So now it's mostly office space as well as low rise buildings with generous amounts of lawn.
A picture of Fornebu airport as seen in 1980, it takes up as much of the peninsula as it can. Fetched from norgeibilder.noAn aerial picture of the Fornebu area in 2025, where the airport has been almost entirely replaced with new development. One four lane main road, as well as a smaller inner loop road services the area. Pulsating out from the middle are bike/pedestrian paths, which are grade separated from the four lane main road. This picture is also fetched from norgeibilder.no

Surprisingly often a country will get rid of an old airport which has been engulfed completely by a city over the course of a century, and then use the land in a rather lackluster manner.

Relying on personal responsibility fails every single time. You can't ask a motorist to do the right thing, you have to design the street or parking lot so doing the wrong thing is physically impossible.

Opted to practice with an older digital camera while out and about in the city today.
A picture of Nedre Strandgate/E136 in Ålesund, looking towards the city core. Many old buildings in varying condition flank the two lane road on each side. Off in the distance, the city hall and the urban mountain Aksla can be seen.A picture of the city centre of Ålesund, looking from the old bus terminal towards the old Post house, as well as the biggest traffic light controlled intersection in the region (luckily, not a high bar to meet). The mountain Aksla looms above the rest of the city.A picture of Skansegata, looking towards Skateflukaia where intercity busses, as well as intercity boats meet up (not that they are visible there, I just found it neat to mention).
The street is just one lane each way, but it has a median that might be pretty in the warmer half of the year when the grass is not dead.Looking down Kipervikgata from the exhibition square. A narrow street with little traffic, and people, which just about has one lane in each direction. The art nouveau architecture Ålesund is well known for is on display at all the buildings along the street.

Morbidly curious about how modern gated communities develop in a seeming absence of urban planning. Where the developers buys as many plots as they can get, and squeeze in as many houses as they can. One of many, many examples that can be found in the Bangkok metro area for instance.
A google earth screenshot from 13°49'10.33" N 100°27'46.55" E in Bangkok, Thailand. The separate gated communities are highlighted by some snip and sketch doodles, showing their odd shape, as well as showing their only formal access points with red circles.
