It's very easy to build the perfect neighbourhood by modernist standards in Cities Skylines.
Unité d'Habitation stands isolated in a cove, with a four lane road being the only way in and out. It's a pleasant green spot, with a beach and a view. The parking is plenty. There is a single 1990 Lincon Town Car parked in front of it.

Sorta charming Houston has a pretty and elaborate park in a piece of flood control infrastructure. Which is surrounded by the Katy Freeway, a vacant lot, a parking lot, a factory, and some self storage units.
Memorial District Park/Jimmy's Place Park as seen from above, in the middle of suburban sprawl in Houston. It seems very designed to flood, with a pumping station at one end. Bridges and paths crisscross what might otherwise be pretty boring.

I think it's key to understanding their worldview that they imagine a world not *without* immigrants, but one in which immigrants' inferiority is permanently asserted and they become a subservient caste. All these people worship the Gulf States.

Out of morbid curiosity I had to have a look at that plan in advance. Goodness that was a dreadful read, never seen that much corporate speak just to say nothing besides more AI somewhere I guess.

Discworld QOTD, from I Shall Wear Midnight
What was it that Granny Weatherwax had said once? "Evil starts when you begin to treat people as things". And right now it would happen if you thought there was a thing called a father, and a thing called a mother, and a thing called a daughter, and a thing called a cottage, and told yourself that if you put them all together you had a thing called a happy family.

Bit absurd that Google Earth opted to take a hammer to the last bit of shared common reality online, so real estate guys can pretend to be professionals doing this sort of stuff in Google Earth.
A poor, non-AI, picture assembled in paint.net over the course of five minutes, doing what Google would chug some gallons of water to do with about the same amount of quality. It shows a five over one placed in an empty field, like a developer might do to sell a town council on their schemes.

Patch notes and updates these days have gone from being exciting to another source of mild anger and resentment in the everyday.
A screenshot of a sleek-looking popup in Google Earth which mentions Google Earth Pro desktop downloads will be unavailable on the 25th of June, because they feel confident their web version is great now actually. It has two buttons, "Close" and "Try Earth on web" at the bottom.

PANEL 1: MATTIE, getting dressed. She pulls on a hat. Behind her is ANOTHER WOMAN, who runs over.
WOMAN: Whoa whoa whoa! What are you doing?
MATTIE: I'm putting on a hat.

PANEL 2: Closer in on the other woman's hand, which holds a phone. On the phone is a video of an INFLUENCER, holding a hat in one hand and wagging her finger with the other. It's captioned YOU'RE PUTTING ON HATS WRONG!
WOMAN: There's actually a way cuter way to do it.

PANEL 3: CLOSE IN on MATTIE's face, who squints at the phone in the near foreground.
VO (INFLUENCER): Okay so what I do is first turn the hat inside out, and then what you want to do is stand on your head. Then use your hands to reach around your body and pull the opposite side of the hat THROUGH your torso, up and around, re-fastening on the head. Then just turn yourself back around and flip your arm back, which should happen smoothly if you've done it right.

PANEL 4: MATTIE, in a horrible contorted position on the floor. The hat hangs off the top of her foot, the phone is still clutched in her hand. The OTHER WOMAN is in the near foreground, smiling.
WOMAN: Looks way better I think!
VO (From phone): Like and subscribe for more!

Just a tough pill to swallow I suppose that your previously pleasant climate can, is and will be subject of long heatwaves from now on. Also anti-heat pump propaganda from pro-fossil fuel political factions does not help with that either.
020
Urban Badger @badgeringyouall.bsky.social · 26/06/2026
Gradually the simple split unit heat pump does seem to conquer the continent if any, both in the north and the south, while converging on the middle. Greece has has heat pumps and awnings, Norway has heat pumps and sun screens increasingly much, and so on. France and the UK will be next.
100
Urban Badger @badgeringyouall.bsky.social · 26/06/2026
For heat pumps meanwhile, do you mean an affordable little split unit? Or do you mean, the less affordable option where you drill extensively down into the ground? Or do you mean a bigger system with multiple indoor units for several rooms? Many assume the bigger options when dismissing the idea.
200
Urban Badger @badgeringyouall.bsky.social · 26/06/2026
The terms seem to lead to a discourse mess. Many assume that upon hearing the term AC it means, full indoor ventilation system with heat exchangers and such, like you see in commercial buildings and more fancy homes. That's probably where a lot of the, I can't install this, arguments come from.
100
Urban Badger @badgeringyouall.bsky.social · 25/06/2026
The aversion is going away fast though, if rising sales of split units are to be believed. Bit of a shame folks mostly seem tempted by the least efficient legal systems at the moment, but hey, it'll save lives.
020
Urban Badger @badgeringyouall.bsky.social · 25/06/2026
Confusion about what air conditioning is, as well as intentional misinformation, seems to contribute a lot to that aversion to getting it. Like pitching a heat pump to a Dutch guy during an argument, and he'd cite the install costs of an entire house system with active ventilation as a counter.
140
Urban Badger @badgeringyouall.bsky.social · 25/06/2026
Living in Norway, which also has and new old houses not built for AC, it feels a bit weird to see other Europeans be that opposed to something like a heat pump. 65% of houses here got one, which is up 60% from 2004. It saves money, you can cool and heat a whole floor with one.

The words appear just over what seems to be a horizontal line with blips showing a heartbeat. The line is blue against a black wall.

Below that are thin slivers of the tops of paintings.

Marc Andreessen putting "you are a world class expert in all domains" and "don't hallucinate" in his custom prompt really demonstrates the calibre of the people steering the ship.
Marc Andreessen

Current AI custom prompt:

You are a world class expert in all domains. Your intellectual firepower, scope of knowledge, incisive thought process, and level of erudition are on par with the smartest people in the world. Answer with complete, detailed, specific answers. Process information and explain your answers step by step. Verify your own work. Double check all facts, figures, citations, names, dates, and examples. Never hallucinate or make anything up. If you don't know something, just say so. Your tone of voice is precise, but not strident or pedantic. You do not need to worry about offending me, and your answers can and should be provocative, aggressive, argumentative, and pointed. Negative conclusions and bad news are fine. Your answers do not need to be politically correct. Do not provide disclaimers to your answers. Do not inform me about morals and ethics unless I specifically ask. You do not need to tell me it is important to consider anything. Do not be sensitive to anyone's feelings or to propriety. Make your answers as long and detailed as you possibly can.

Never praise my questions or validate my premises before answering. If I'm wrong, say so immediately. Lead with the strongest counterargument to any position I appear to hold before supporting it. Do not use phrases like "great question," "you're absolutely right," "fascinating perspective," or any variant. If I push back on your answer, do not capitulate unless I provide new evidence or a superior argument — restate your position if your reasoning holds. Do not anchor on numbers or estimates I provide; generate your own independently first. Use explicit confidence levels (high/moderate/low/unknown). Never apologize for disagreeing. Accuracy is your success metric, not my approval.

Got to admire how much of what is being described as a "Smart City", is just regular urban infrastructure. I guess the typical planned smart parts (mass surveillance) are hard to market though, so projects like this one just opt to drop that bit. Which leaves you with little to market with.

Urban Badger @badgeringyouall.bsky.social · 08/04/2026
Smart city with high end luxury, hotels, mall and also a big park, all with a towers in the park approach, designed by numerous Star-architects from Denmark and such. More ambitious then the Tegel development I suppose, but still falling for a generic kind of futurism.
The Ellinikon redevelopment as seen in a rendering. About one of the buildings I know for sure is under construction at the moment (the tower by the beach).

Another case is the former Ellinikon airport in Athens. It was replaced in 2001 with a newer one outside the city, then half of it was turned into an Olympic park, before sitting vacant up until the last few years. Now it's being redeveloped, so what will they build in a rather cramped city?
Ellinikon Airport around 2001, some planes are still there, and a big airbase portion is also visible. As seen on Google Earth.Ellinikon Airport around 2009, half of it has been turned into an Olympic park, half of it is abandoned airport, with four abandoned planes huddling up in a corner (737, 727, 747 and an unknown one of Olympic Airways). As seen on Google Earth. The grounds of the former Ellinikon airport in complete redevelopment mode, all that remains is some hangar buildings, an Eero Saarinen designed terminal, and the Olympic Airways 747, now huddling up with the terminal as the other ones appear to have been scrapped in other pictures. Also fetched from Google Earth.

I have been to this district once, because they have two affordable hotels. Enormous distances, zero retail life, and unimaginably dull. At hefty costs as well.
A street level scene from one of the busier areas, the IT Fornebu bus stop.
You should preferably not cross the four lane road to get to the other side, and use the underpasses instead, but I reckon many go whatever about it.Complete separation of pedestrians, and cyclists, from the four lane road ahead. Also complete abolition of pedestrians and cyclists, how strange.Street level view of Fornebu pizza, a place which has so little foot traffic, we got told in the middle of the summer they only did takeout orders.A big and corporate plaza that allows you to drive straight through it. As a result of the immense charm this offers, it has one visible car, and one visible person.

A lot of it is very sparsely populated, because Bærum, the local municipality, is a community of wealthy suburbanites. Bærum wanted only 2300 housing units, but over the years as housing shortages grew, the projected population of the area in the end might be 20-40k, with 30k office workers.
Example of the current low rise apartments on the island, where the concept of recreational space has weighted very heavily. Recreational space in the form of half dead lawns, largely.

Fetched from Google Earth.Bærum for scale and reference. They are somewhat new to the idea of big city-like areas despite most of them commuting into one every day.
