A decent and fair party leader standing next to a young Nat that never grew up. EB should resign and go and campaign for Luxon.

I love how Willis and Luxon keep blaming Labour for inflation increases during a global pandemic, and won't admit that it was largely externally driven. BUT firmly and repeatedly blame inflation now on fuel price increases and external factors. YOU CAN'T HAVE IT BOTH WAYS YOU ASS CLOWNS! #nzpol

On the ACT campaign trail, one issue emerges above the others
ACT MPs rolled into Tauranga in their big pink bus - Big Pinky - on Monday. Voters urged them to do more on race-relations and one law for all. Stuff joined them for the day.

NZME will make a lot of noise this week about how much Labour's promises are gonna cost, and it's worth comparing to the noise the same journos made about the cost of the coalition's RONS (over $56b) – i.e. when they even bothered to mention it, it was hidden behind innocuous framing and paywalls.

What these means is that, for example, Stage 1 of surface light rail between Auckland City Centre and Mt Roskill, about 9km, 'costs' $2.25billion in the Greens policy, but would be $0.9billion if it were $100m per km. Of course, the first line will be most expensive, but you get the point!

Quick offcut. We have lots of dwellings being consented at the moment (yay) but, unusually, it's not translating into increased investment in housing. It looks a bit like late-2010 when RBNZ upped the OCR during a slump (before retreating quickly). Note how much *instability* monetary policy causes!

A "culture pass" given to everyone on their 18th birthday is an instantly effective and productive policy a government could consider, if it wants to boost the arts-based economy. Bonus: greater civic engagement and confidence amongst young people. Story from 2023: www.thepost.co.nz/nz-news/3500...
Text from the linked story, 8 August 2023 https://www.thepost.co.nz/nz-news/350047956/push-introduce-culture-pass-youth-new-zealand

In November, Germany became the latest European country to roll out the popular scheme for young people, which sees people coming of age given €200 to spend on things like museums, movies, music, theatre and books - a birthday present, of sorts.

In the wake of the pandemic when most live entertainment and art experiences ground to a halt, the move followed countries like France, Italy and Spain, which had their own version of the scheme, and hoped to bolster youth engagement with the arts, encourage creative careers, and remove access barriers to culture.Text from the article linked in the post:

...Chris Casey of the Point Chevalier Social Enterprise Trust, an Auckland-based advocate for the pass’s local introduction, has been lobbying Government, saying it would help curb youth crime at a time when parties were “outdoing each other” on policies related to youth justice.

The scheme would be simple to implement and could see tens of thousands of young people given the pass on their 18th birthday or similar, Casey said, with credit available to use via an app or website.

Amid a cost of living crisis which had unfairly affected low-paid youth, cultural experiences were often out of financial reach, Casey said.

New Zealand was happy to fund superannuitants but there was a “mismatch” with how young people were creatively supported as they entered adulthood, he said. “It’s lazy politics not to try it ... Small things become the catalyst for bigger things.”

A good piece by Phil Smith, which makes the same points that people like me, Geoffrey Palmer & others have been making for years: NZ needs more MPs & Parliament needs to employ dozens more committee staff to ensure independence and that the workload of scrutiny & investigation can be managed #nzpol
A paragraph from the article in the quoted post:
“Increased resourcing would require more space, more MPs and a bigger secretariat. In some overseas jurisdictions each committee would have dedicated lawyers and researchers and a significant budget. Here they run on sweat (and very likely tears), with tiny teams and some staff working across multiple committees. The Parliament Act 2025 (which removes Parliament's own funding from direct government control) might ultimately help with secretariat resourcing, but an increase in the number of MPs is equally crucial.”
