#nzpol There are so many unasked questions about our current economic 'policy' one of which - how come employment growth in 2024 and 2025 was worse than the GFC? There wasn't a worldwide slowdown in those years - the growth in unemployment here is entirely self-inflicted.

If you really want to get "more people off welfare and into work", consider not tanking the economy. That typically works better than performative cruelty.
The party also promised:
to provide "intensive, work-focused support" for 30,000 jobseekers who have been on Jobseeker for more than a year, with more funding for employment programmes that support young people into work.
lowering the rate of payment for those who had been on the benefit for two of the previous three years, from 1 April 2028. There would be a smaller reduction for households with dependent children.
those who repeatedly leave employment without good and sufficient reason would face a 26-week non-entitlement period, up from 13 weeks.
from 1 April 2028, the minimum residence period to qualify for main benefits will increase from two years to five years.
Upston said the party was focused on "getting more people off welfare and into work".

I love how Willis and Luxon keep blaming Labour for inflation increases during a global pandemic, and won't admit that it was largely externally driven. BUT firmly and repeatedly blame inflation now on fuel price increases and external factors. YOU CAN'T HAVE IT BOTH WAYS YOU ASS CLOWNS! #nzpol

I wish I could say the same about Edmonds on National right now. Willis is a hopeless minister of finance but she has got the gift of the gab and doesn’t hesitate to talk over Edmonds who never protests or does the same.

On the ACT campaign trail, one issue emerges above the others
ACT MPs rolled into Tauranga in their big pink bus - Big Pinky - on Monday. Voters urged them to do more on race-relations and one law for all. Stuff joined them for the day.

I noticed something interesting. An internet search for Vote Compass brought up a site named VoteCheck before the correct site. The questionnaire on Vote Check has questions worded in ways that I think will tend to steer voters towards parties on the right

The Council Chambers where they meet are in the Town Hall. Their administration building is not called City Hall either. The Treaty of Waitangi wasn’t signed with Martin van Buren. It was signed with Queen Victoria. I’m all for using words from te reo. I’d rather them than Trump language.

NZME will make a lot of noise this week about how much Labour's promises are gonna cost, and it's worth comparing to the noise the same journos made about the cost of the coalition's RONS (over $56b) – i.e. when they even bothered to mention it, it was hidden behind innocuous framing and paywalls.

What these means is that, for example, Stage 1 of surface light rail between Auckland City Centre and Mt Roskill, about 9km, 'costs' $2.25billion in the Greens policy, but would be $0.9billion if it were $100m per km. Of course, the first line will be most expensive, but you get the point!

"National leader Christopher Luxon did not want taxpayer funding going into a "white elephant" that was not commercially viable. "Of course we're very committed to our 17 roads of national significance and we make no apology for that." Hmmm which one is a white elephant? #nzpol

Can we criticise the Nats’ insane transport policies without insulting an age group. I know many boomers who are against more expensive roads. The non-boomer Nat candidate for AKL Central has repeatedly demanded more car parks near the CRL stations! She goes on about the “war on cars”.

we need to set aside the fact that it is rooted in expletive, and make "bullshit" a word we teach children in year one. A word that so succinctly describes something that is more abundant than nitrogen should not be a dirty word.

#nzpol $1.75bn for road - is OK as allowed to subsidise road, so don't have to prove commercial sustainability😢. $4bn for rail - not OK 'cos can't afford, need to prove commercial viability, don't want to subsidise white elephant💔. Comparing apples with apples😠 Go figure (again) 🤔. Sigh. 🙏🏾.

Nicola’s ferries won’t arrive until 2029, if ever. IREX would’ve been sailing by now and cost less that just one of National’s new RONs, that they now also can’t build. You only have a few weeks left to enrol. If you aren’t enrolled, your vote is like Nicola’s ferries. non-existent. #nzpol

ACT’s purpose is to work for the wellbeing of a small rich minority & devil take the hindmost. They cover it up with a thin veil of populism such as against boy racers. Besides motorbikes the loudest cars I’ve seen are sportscars worth 100’s of 1000s of $s. I’ll bet ACT won’t target them.

Quick offcut. We have lots of dwellings being consented at the moment (yay) but, unusually, it's not translating into increased investment in housing. It looks a bit like late-2010 when RBNZ upped the OCR during a slump (before retreating quickly). Note how much *instability* monetary policy causes!
