A pity National didn't decide vote splitting was stupid before John Key gifted Epsom to ACT. We might have escaped David Seymour had he not set up vote splitting for mutual benefit.

One day after my late brother's birthday and 5 days before his death day. Still a poignant week for me. I just wish he had lived longer. Snap frozen, as we say, on Mt Makalu in the Himalayas. Aged 32, he had been seen as invincible. Until he wasn't.
I think this may have been the summit Mount Tasman.Bill Denz standing in front of his much loved cottage on Margate Ave in Broad Bay, Dunedin.

Mark likes to talk about when trees dance - when there are so many tui in a tree that it looks as though the branches are dancing, even on a calm day. The tui don't stand still for us to count but there are times we must have over 20 in the kowhai.

Him Here is critical of the role of the morepork in A Remarkable Place to Die tonight. Both scenes had it fully alert during daylight hours. And when it flew off, they added sound effects of noisy wing flapping when, he tells me, they are silent in flight.

I am still chuckling at the vid of my 3 year old granddaughter- French papa, NZ mum, Sydney born and raised - declaring categorically “I don’t want to be French. I want to be a penguin.” Penguin/kiwi -close enough, kiddo.

Even by NZ First's standards, selecting Murray Chong as their candidate for New Plymouth is scraping the bottom of the barrel.

Dog vs possum this morning. Dog won but 3 questions remain. Why was the possum on the ground under a hedge in broad daylight? Was it unwell, likely poisoned by Lucretia Borgia next door? And where has the dog buried it in the time between the fight to the death and me calling for back up?

I particularly dislike colour enhancement on flower photos. AI versions of magnolias, though, are Something Else. I have to laugh.

When will analysts and media link high fuel prices not just to Trump attacking Iran but also our abnormally low dollar, engineered by this government? High pump prices are a cost borne by most NZers to indirectly prop up exporters and farners.

I have a really bad cold and I can't remember when I last had a cold. Maybe 10 or 15 years ago? I feel like I don't know what to do. I guess the first step should be to do a Covid test.

Part of our lives here is assessing new cultivars from Mark's breeding programme. There are a couple of rather nice yellow magnolias in flower today. However, it is a very long way from first bloom to selection. If you think you have not seen a magnolia like these before, you are right. .

Q: Why do we hear next to nothing about the impact of the low NZ $? A: Look who benefits. The farming sector, exporters and those who derive income from overseas. The cost of living, however, for those who live and work here continues to rise, along with inflation.

Some of us are old enough to recall the polio survivors wearing calipers in our school days. More recently, when I started teaching, deaf units were the norm. German measles vaccine rendered those redundant.

Ralph just caught a huge hare. As he can usually only run down small rabbits, quite how he managed to run down a full grown hare is a mystery to us. Mark was walking with him and heard the furore but by then he had already despatched it across the rainbow bridge.

Imagine dealing with the hole in the ozone now. NZ First: the hole is a myth ACT: the hole is greatly exaggerated and taking action will harm The Economy Nats: yes we care but we haven't made the hole. Bigger countries should act first and we may follow. In 2050

Was David Seymour's objection to public art an attempt to get in early and suck the joy out of Aucland's CRL? I notice there seems to be a policy of making those new stations visually striking with art and sculpture.

For over 40 years, we have fed successive dogs on possum. Skinned and cut into joints, it is the main breakfast item. Enter Ralph. The largest, scruffiedt dog we have ever owned. Rescued from the pound. Ralph does not like possum, does not eat joints of possum. We have tried for 4 years.
