"My co-worker Mike Hosking skewered the Labour leader with incorrect figures! I declare this a draw!" Honestly, Audrey Young continues to be a parody of herself.
Audrey Young, NZ Herald: "One-all on housing

Hipkins was aggressive, but so was Hosking. He tried to skewer Hipkins on how a capital gains tax would raise what Labour had calculated, given that the Treasury has since slashed forecasts for house price growth. Hipkins said his economic advisers had told him the Treasury forecasts were more than the 3% average over the forecast period, but Hosking insisted otherwise.

Like Ginny Andersen lecturing Mark Mitchell in recent weeks on how “wrong” he was about transport funding, Hosking lectured Hipkins about how he had been wrongly advised. “The forecasts tell you very clearly the 3% is not there.”

Only they don’t. The forecast for the next four June years (including the current one) is for an average 3.12% growth in house prices. The forecast over the four years beginning in the 2027-28 financial year – when the CGT would kick in – is 3.75%. Hosking skewered Hipkins, but it was on the basis of incorrect figures. Hipkins wasn’t familiar enough with the numbers to have skewered Hosking. One-all. Hipkins has since familiarised himself with the forecasts that back up what he was told by his advisers."

I don't really want the guy who makes sure Mike Hosking is happy running our public service broadcaster. The country's a much better place when Hosking is fucking miserable.
Media Insider, NZ Herald: "‘Staino’ is a man on the move, splitting his workday between the first-floor NZ Herald-Newstalk ZB newsroom and the ground-floor suite of entertainment radio stations.

The first two hours of his day are what I’d describe as the “Hosking Hours” – he’s at the ZB desks, earpods in, listening to what’s coming out of the breakfast show, and making sure the country’s biggest radio talent is, indeed, having a happy day.

“Anything you need?” Winstanley often calls across to Hosking as the broadcaster heads towards the door shortly after 9am. Sometimes there’s a bit of banter; the answer is invariably no."

I don't love dunking on folks but it's so fucking funny to me that Trump was convicted of 34 felonies 2 years ago, faced no punishment, and went on to win the presidency a second time and journalists are still like, "hmm, I have an inkling that maybe he believes he's above the law for some reason."
Post from NYT reporter Eric Lipton

"What an odd moment in United States history.

A U.S. president is running an overtly political campaign advertisement, right before midterm elections, paid for by the U.S. government.

Trump appears to believe he is immune from any kind of legal limit."

It's okay everyone! Chief ass-coverer Audrey Young has decided Luxon was only saying "cry me a river" to Hipkins, not about the subject Hipkins was talking about. Because it's not like Luxon has a history of openly not caring about ordinary Kiwis... oh wait I'm hearing he has a long history of it
Audrey Young, NZ Herald: "Luxon’s sarcastic boo-hoo response, “cry me a river”, was clearly aimed at Hipkins, but Labour has decided that two can play the “bull****” game and is depicting it as Luxon’s attitude to ordinary Kiwis.

This is what went down in Parliament.

Hipkins: “When real wages have fallen, power prices have gone up, insurance prices have gone up, rates have gone up, insurance has gone up – all by more than 20%, under his leadership, in just the last two years – will he now admit that the cost-of-living crisis is not only not over; it’s getting worse under his leadership?”

Luxon: “What I’d say, again – you know, cry me a river”.

This is how that exchange ended up in Hipkins’ speech: “You can choose a Prime Minister who will fight to get your costs down. Or a Prime Minister whose response to rising prices was ‘cry me a river’. "

When the hivemind that is the press gallery collectively choose not to make something an issue, not only does the public suffer, everyone in media does too. I'm not surprised RNZ's "relentlessly curious" host Kathryn Ryan hasn't heard about Luxon's comments, because she reads the same news we do.

It sure does say "something" that National’s tax attack lies have been effective, but what it says is our institutions – like the one you're inexplicitly the Senior Political Correspondent for, Audrey – have utterly failed at their job.
Audrey Young, NZ Herald: "National was not just telling lies about Labour’s tax plans, it was “bull****”, Hipkins said.

It says something about the effectiveness of National’s tax attack that he needed to resort to swearing to get attention, but it worked."

It was actually fine when Obama tried to freeze Fox out, because Fox is not a legitimate news organization, and the fact that a CNN anchor, of all people, thinks they're equivalent is one reason CNN has lower ratings than a test pattern. Also, this is...not dignified.

Not surprised the media’s reaction to Dirty Work is reflexive protectionism, as the same thing happened with Dirty Politics. Key difference is back then awful people used journalists to surreptitiously launch bad-faith attacks, whereas now, they get their own columns. It’s all out in the open.

This is like when Trump won and some banker said he was happy he could say slurs again. Maybe when Seymour’s PM Oliver!
The Guardian: it lacks the elegance of "greed is good", but as a distillation of the spirit of the age, it's right up there. "I feel liberated," a top banker told the Financial Times shortly after Donald Trump's victory in the 2024 US presidential election. "We can say 'retard' and

I find it fascinating that NZME's Thomas Coughlan causally acknowledges that people in the media – incl him! – know the TPU is dodgy as shit and Jordan Williams is "crass". Because this is the same guy who reprints TPU talking points and attacks bloggers who were formerly in the Labour party.
"The first allegation, that the TPU has taken money from tobacco companies, is a matter of record and has been known since at least 2019.

The book is a scathing takedown of Williams as a person and political operative. Much of this may be new to the public who do not always follow politics closely, but little will be new to the political world. These people, their relationships and activities are public knowledge and have been written about in mainstream media. It’s no secret that Williams is somewhat crass on social media."

Daily Indignation @dailyindignation.bsky.social · 22/09/2026
Look, I get it: if you're RNZ, to appear "balanced" so NZME's Shayne Currie doesn't write a hysterical article about your liberal bias, you platform known bad faith actors. But you know not informing your audience of their true goals is bad, right? You know Currie won't be happy until you're dead?
RNZ: "Hager also criticised the media's role, suggesting it contributed to poor transparency.

"Despite all their undeclared political machinations, both Farrar and Williams are often interviewed uncritically in the mainstream media - far more often than most genuinely independent experts and commentators.

"At the time of writing, for instance, Radio New Zealand had interviewed Farrar about 600 times since 2007, an astonishing amount of coverage considering that he is one of the least independent people available. He is often introduced with labels such as 'polling company maestro', while Williams is given labels such as 'anti-waste campaigner'. It is lazy journalism.""

"The review heard from a food truck that considered setting up in Australia because the process in New Zealand was so bureaucratic.

He said when the vendor explored this option with Australian regulators, they were given one contact and a clear pathway to set up the business.

Meanwhile, in New Zealand, they had to meet with 13 officials from eight central and local government agencies.

The vendor said the pathway to set up was “incredibly confusing and complex”.

High-profile restaurant closures in recent months have included Auckland waterfront restaurant Harbourside Ocean Bar Grill and Karangahape Rd cafe and bar Verona."

Right-wingers like Mike Hosking will only be happy when the country is just cold, grey concrete. Hopefully ones he can drive his wanker car on. I get the feeling the only art Mike likes is classical Roman.
There's a battle of the ideologies on display as ACT looks to cut art spending on roading projects. It's very ACT, i.e. fiscally disciplined. Every $1 million on roading needs to be $1 million on roading, not 99% on roads and 1% on art. The art is an issue for several reasons, mainly for me because most of it is unimpressive. I'm not actually against art per se. I like art. I prefer private operators to pay for it, but I wouldn't die in the ditch trying to cut it. On our way home on the new highway north of Auckland there are a bunch of Mãori soldiers or chiefs, sort of metal cutouts that are rusted. It's a look. I don't like it, which is the other bit about art. It's fraught. There is also obviously an overt Mãori fixation around it. There's not a lot of Siddell's or Sydney's about the place. There are more conceptual, race-based interpretations that you might argue may not get a lot of commissions if it wasn't for the NZTA. I think the inescapable conclusion is art is for better days, more affluent times, in countries that have productivity levels way better than ours and that have handled their finances better than ours. Art is a reward, not a must have.
