A broken computer chair
Someone had wrapped it all in a star of twine
A throne

New poem in the inaugural issue of Waltz and honored to share space with so many incredible poets. waltzjournal.com/issue-one/
Screenshot of my poem on the Waltz website. The poem reads:

Paradise
In fact, an unsettled heaven is what I had prepared for. In all directions the songs of specters, a harp floating midair.
There is one difference between a hymn and a song and it's in its power to parch its listener. I sometimes wonder if angels too need water for how long they're asked to hold their notes. I imagine them singing, shining, rows of plastic bottles lined at their sandaled feet.
Heaven is the planet we destroy after this one.
In the beginning, they too called this place magic.

Rain Light
by W.S. Merwin

All day the stars watch from long ago
my mother said I am going now
when you are alone you will be all right
whether or not you know you will know
look at the old house in the dawn rain
all the flowers are forms of water
the sun reminds them through a white cloud
touches the patchwork spread on the hill
the washed colors of the afterlife
that lived there long before you were born
see how they wake without a question
even though the whole world is burning
.
.
.

This poem appeared in The Shadow of Sirius by W.S. Merwin, published by Copper Canyon Press, 2008. Shared here with profound gratitude.

Artwork by Robert Frede Kenter that accompanies "For Love, We Attempt Another Ars Poetica".FOR LOVE, WE ATTEMPT ANOTHER ARS POETICA

Vikki C.

To choose to live in this world,
blue or otherwise. That is what I tell the poet who tries

so hard to write the best opening. To creep naked into winter
without a word of evolution. For now, my new meds

save you the trouble of visiting—meaning
estrangement is a spare room not worth its view.

All year, waves break against alien rocks, wrong and spectacular.
And our secret isn’t how we left it, smothered with flowers,

but figuratively it’s there—as we are—asking:
How can the poem thrive without my anxiety?

Evening piles its tricks over my body, daring me
to leave you again. Spoon-feeding me to its damp glitter,

where abeyance is a far suspension bridge. I think of that mother
who couldn’t bear to stay on Earth, when Earth was still home.

How her orphaned daughter grew up not-a-poet—choosing a different
art altogether—painting a dead bird’s wings to obsession.

Flames of white feathers. Feathers of white flames. No matter the myth,
the irony after rising—is the fear of heights. Where questions on the

mechanics of breath happen to be mine. Will the rope soften too?
How much sky is true and available?

How will I lower myself, without missing you?

RIP David Hockney 💔
I'll tell you a story, this is just a little diversion. I was working at Ken Tyler's in a print workshop in New York at the same time that the Van Gogh show was on at the Met, "Van Gogh in Arles," and I went to see it. A stunning exhibition, and I went back and Ken said to me, "It's great, but isn't it disgusting in the end in that room where they're selling all the postcards and posters and stuff?"I said, "Well, no. I must tell you I bought three of the posters and I stuck one
up above the bed, so when I wake up in the morning, I can look at Van Gogh's bedroom, that marvelous painting of the bed. Frankly, it costs ten dollars and it's a stunning reproduction of the painting. I think Van Gogh would be thrilled that you could go away with wonderful reproductions like that. He wouldn't care at all; he'd think it was marvelous that people can do it."
I said, "You're just a terrible snob, Ken, and I'm surprised considering that you're a printer. I'm surprised you can't see that sharing it would be more thrilling."Because actually, it's new ways of printing that are opening up many things. I
point out that when I was playing with Xerox machines, I was also interested in the
philosophical implications of all this. I found for instance, that in Eastern Europe, you
cannot buy, you cannot even own a Xerox machine. Of course if you could, you'd
have a free press, and you couldn't have censorship. For instance, if the one now becomes the thousand, it's all very different. If
the Czar's secret police knew of a subversive printer, found the printing place, and
found ninety-nine leaflets, thinking they'd printed one hundred, then burned the
ninety-nine, thinking, "There's one left, what's it matter?" But today, so long as
there's one left, there's millions left actually.

Hello #writingcommunity and #poetry lovers 📚💙 The #poetrybrew this week is for the nature lovers 🕊️ “The Peace of Wild Things” by Wendell Berry
The Peace of Wild Things

When despair for the world grows in me
and I wake in the night at the least sound
in fear of what my life and my children’s lives may be,
I go and lie down where the wood drake
rests in his beauty on the water, and the great heron feeds.
I come into the peace of wild things
who do not tax their lives with forethought
of grief. I come into the presence of still water.
And I feel above me the day-blind stars
waiting with their light. For a time
I rest in the grace of the world, and am free.

"Work" for #weirdpoemwednesday first appeared in a now-defunct online mag, appeared also in my first chapbook Like Now.
Work

I make mistakes at work. They’re very fine.
I ship them everywhere around the world.
On Mondays, big ones. Tuesdays, little ones.
On Wednesdays, sales. On Thursdays, ordering.
But every Friday I do something strange.
I’ve never spoken it aloud before.
I climb up out onto the roof and sit
All by myself. I close my eyes and breathe.
The world spins for a while. I let it slow.
And then I pull a piece of paper from
My hat, a pencil from behind my ear.
I smooth the paper on my knee and write

One thought, as perfect as a tortoise shell.
I eat it. It’s my home next week in hell.
