The capture the flag game was fun, but the kids were just so defensive. I expected each game to last 10-15 minutes. Instead they lasted 45 minutes each. The second game only ended because I declared a tie so I could feed the children pizza and cake.

I'm getting organized for my son's birthday party. About 20 kids are going to have a mega game of capture the flag with swords, where the flags are about 100 meters apart. I expect a lot of running and stabbing and general awesomeness.

I was today years old when I realized what those lines mean on a 3-dimensional graph: each line going one way connects points with the same x-coordinate, and each line going the other way connections points wit the same y-coordinate. That was never obvious to me because they curve so much.

They said yes! The landlords of the space I've been looking to lease have finally agreed to new wording on the clause that was a sticking point, and it's being signed right now by all involved parties! My sword class has a new home come November!

I will never understand math anxiety. When I'm anxious, I do lots of math to remove the ambiguity of the situation. Math is what makes the anxiety go away to a manageable extent.

I can see so many stars in the morning. One of the best things about running in the autumn and winter is just how dark it still is by the time I get out the door. This morning, I saw Jupiter and Mars, and I kept trying to see Saturn but it wasn't quite dark enough to see.

Before my trip to Salem yesterday, I took my little guy on a 10 mile bike ride, stopping at 2 playgrounds, before the rain started. A birder was photographing the wetlands next to the first playground. Before we left, she showed us a cool picture she took of a hawk!

In one day, I just logged my fastest 5k run AND my fastest 500 yard swim. Results compared to the past 2 years, so I know I've done a faster 5k back in my 30s, but I think this actually is my fastest 500 yards. Now I just need to bike 10 miles to finish the triathlon. 😛

I feel strongly that field trips make school better. Students learn more by going out into the world than they would by the same amount of time sitting in a classroom. I wonder if I could write up a curriculum that covers all the standards of the common core for a year just using field trips...?

I saw some parallels between I.33 and The Flower of Battle this summer, when I taught classes on them back to back. When I posted on a Reddit HEMA forum about it, most of the responses had a flavor of, "No, and you're stupid for even thinking this." (Only one person ACTUALLY called me stupid.)

I expressed to one of my best friends that I'm a little sad not to be as nerdy as some other people because I spend so much time exercising that I could spend doing nerdy things. I'm going to keep exercising, but it makes me sad when I compare myself to nerdier nerds.

My old boss got promoted, but she was in my school again talking to my new boss. When she saw me she made a point to talk about how good a teacher I am. I didn't know what to say, so I told the story about how I accidentally converted a student to satanism and how good that was for her spiritually.

My goal for today's workout was 11,000 lbs. (Today is high weight/low reps day.) I missed that goal by almost 2000 lbs, but that is primarily because I added 20lbs (8%) to my deadlift and cut my reps from last week in half. This was still a good workout, despite the low number at the end.

I was a little worried about the viking era swordsmanship class I taught at the regional Thing last week. But the class went well. There were enough swords so everyone got one that they liked to hold. A college professor asked if I would give that same talk at his university.
