We've done Spooky Alter Month for the past few years - let's keep the tradition alive. Every post in October will try and tap into the Halloween vibes. Kicking off is the Chernabog hand painted after Fantasia's 'Night on Bald Mountain'.

Got a dental cleaning while in Korea because I hate my current dentist in the US. $45 without insurance, great work, in and out in 40 minutes. Sigh our healthcare system.

I've only painted a few, but I love how narrative two-paneled alters can be. Works so well for film inspired pieces.

At Roastery N5RM for the second time this week, drinking some of the best coffee I’ve ever had in my life. Seriously, if you’re a coffee drinker in Seoul, check this place out.

What a treat to see Lee Gihun’s work in person while visiting Korea. I don’t follow the contemporary art world especially close, but his work has mesmerized me for years.

The last Mucha piece I painted before the Sheoldred. Something fun about envisioning evil monsters as 19th century pinups.

Something I love about alters, but landscape alters in particular, is getting lost in all the tiny spaces. Fixating on details smaller than a square millimeter.

I have to be careful about how often I repost this alter. Difficult to take in that much beauty.

This piece was concepted over a year before I painted it. Originally I envisioned the original Kiki-Jiki, but realized that didn't make a lot of mechanical sense as Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker can't copy himself. "Reflection" sells it much better imo.

So just how thin are my alters? I've always strove to keep my work sleeve playable, undistinguishable from an unaltered card. Pretty thin.

Alphonse Mucha Sheoldred hand painted after his 1897 'Bières de la Meuse' lithograph. Also referencing Ryan Pancoast's Sheoldred illustration, Mark Tedin's depiction of Yawgmoth from Inquest magazine, and Chris Rahn's original art of course.

It wouldn't be a complete alter if I didn't scan and photograph the card, clean up the images, see something I don't like, go back and paint it. Times two.

When Jace, the Mindsculptor was printed I was still taking commissions and it was easily my most requested card. To this day it's the card I've painted on the most - I've done at least 40.
