#WIPSnips 'wall' You know I'm always going to leap at a chance to share a Horus snip 😂 from The Hour of the Day, TW vol 5 books.bookfunnel.com/TippingWorld...
It was always weird to move while see-through; your sense of touch was deadened like you were wrapped up in layers of blankets so you kind of bounced around and it was hard to tell if you were touching things at all or clinging to them way too hard. That made it just no fun at all to climb over that big tall pile of dirt and down the other side.
Wasn’t no other choice, though: there was no question of using his Vision. You couldn’t when you went see-through. Your Sight felt too acute, like your senses was naked. Exposed to the outer world and under assault.
He’d had the incredibly unsettling thought that he wasn’t invisible but had actually unmade himself, so’s all that was left was memories and will. Would explain why everyone who tried it about peed their pants, and why it hurt so much to come back from it. It was the sort of thought that did a body no good, especially not now when he was going to have to stay like this for hours.
Took forever to get down the far face of the wall, which was twice as tall and didn’t have ladders built into it. The hard-packed dirt came apart in his grip while he climbed. Been raining on and off since spring arrived, and the regulars were hard-pressed to keep the wall in shape. One big storm in a spot where they didn’t watch the wall so careful and their enemies could walk onto their soil.
He’d thought to stop in the deep trench at the foot of the wall and take a breather, but there was a layer of sticky mud along its bottom and it smelled like pee. Probably it was pee, from the guys stuck with long watches on the wall above as couldn’t get a toilet break pissing onto enemy soil. He didn’t want to sit down in it however his arms shook.

The book cover sits at the center of the image. It shows a gothic window with pale yellow glass rimmed with white flowers, leaves, claws, branches, and strange hair? flower petal? crab-like monsters. Standing in front of the window is the silhouette of a man in a fedora. Towards the bottom right of the cover is the logo for this year's SPFBO Finalists. The background image is a close up of a sepia toned dogwood flower's center.

#WIPSnips 05 10 2026 ‘Wall’ From “To Save The Sun” Part I
I punched the wall in response once. Twice. A third time, and on until my knuckles bled.

-“Kaitani, what did that guy do to you?” R’Otem-i asked.

“What?”

-“A Wanderer’s eyes are not just for show; you may have been rushing me but I saw you look his way and him turn away deliberately. What did he do to you?” R’Otem-i’s tone changed to seriousness.

“I told you I was taën; when there was still a prince it was the taën’s duty to sentence an accused person with a punishment. The prince liked violence, but I did not want my ‘friend’ to be hurt, so I told the prince the punishment I chose and that I would take it by proxy.”

-“Is that why your back is scarred?”

“Yes,” I said through gritted teeth. “And after that, Taeiyo became afraid of the power I had as taën and didn’t want to see me again. He avoids me, avoids looking at me, and it enrages me still that someone I cared about so deeply left me like that after I did what I could to spare him.”

-“You loved him, didn’t you?” R’Otem-i perceived correctly. And the question was more rhetorical than one that needed an answer, but I nodded affirmation regardless. I did love Taeiyo. I hadn’t ever had the chance to understand the feelings for what they were but I knew heart sickness and betrayal felt like a chasm in my being.

#WIPSnips - "Wall" From The Erstwhile Tyler Kyle! D : In which Tyler finds an oddly shaped clue! On sale now for Hallowe'en: books2read.com/u/boB9YL And here!: steve-westenra.itch.io/the-erstwhil...
"What I can only assume is the room at the bottom of those stairs is a swathe of black on screen seven. It’s not just that the room is dark, either. It’s like the blackness is seething with bugs, bristling with the hair of something too big for the space. Only the corners are empty, glowing an eerie blue like Gene’s set up a blacklight.
And then the blackness moves.
I bolt all the way to the door, gripping the sides of the frame as what could be a giant-ass cat curves its back against the confines of the wall, like one of Josh’s rats moving in its sleep. The shot seems to defy physics—I can’t tell if whatever that animal is takes up the whole room, or if the camera is somehow oriented inside a tiny box filming something smaller. I can’t tell what’s wall and what’s ceiling. As the thing settles, I glimpse a nugget of leg or knee. The limb is spindly, scarily narrow for something the animal’s size, like a wolf on stilts, like the folded legs of a dead spider." - The Erstwhile Tyler Kyle

"I glance back at the blackened windows of the hotel office. Inside, an electronic device blinks off-on-off-on like a flickering modem light. Something about this struggling machine on an island technologically trapped in the 1850s compels me. I stand in front of the window, press my palm to the glass. I stare inside, and though I can’t place why, for only a moment, it’s like someone’s staring back. Like the machine is an eye—blinking, assessing, watching.
The breeze ripples against Three Wolf Moon. It could be Echo Island’s breath, a deep exhale after years holding it all in." - The Erstwhile Tyler Kyle

OCTOBER BOOKS DAY 4 My recs so far have been non-horrifying, how about some elusive monstrosities and body mutilation? From @horrorsong.blog and Joanna C Galdone
Wingspan of Severed Hands by Joe Koch cover is yellow on black photo collage and shows a woman's torso and leg emerging from a cloud of dust, and a hand with a beam of light passing through it vertically. Tailypo, possibly the world's scariest picture book according to my weak-ass friends who despite being adults were terrified and mad at me for showing it to them. Illustrations by Paul Galdone (I believe was the author's father). Cover shows a creature with a long tail hiding in some reeds.

Cover image of a novella called The River Devours the Moon, written by Kaya Skovdatter. A woman's head floats underwater in the upper half of the image. Her eyes closed and a bubble escaping from her open lips, her hair drifting in wispy strands. The entire image is washed blue, and light glows up illuminating her face, from the lower half of the image. The title is overlaid against the cover image, its text matte white. At the top of the image is a string of blurb text that reads: "Elegant. Surreal. Some of Kaya's best work." - A.G.A. Wilmot, author of WitheredCover image of a book called The Collected Hulderotica Year One, written by Kaya Skovdatter. Background is a figure in a shadowed figure in a scarf and dress, holding an umbrella. Their face too is covered in shadow, only two unnerving points of light shining out of that darkness. Around the figure is a lush, overgrown forest painted in a variety of greens, and before them is a rock-edged forest pool with the figure's reflection cast in its green-tinged surface. The title is overlaid against the cover image, its text matte white.
