I've heard people make claims that AI would lead to a new Renaissance, but I didn't imagine it'd happen like this:
Screenshot of a Tweet from Pope Leo XIV. It reads:

"In this era of artificial intelligence, it is becoming urgen to distinguish human art from what machines produce. There is an ontological difference, even before an aesthetic one, between art and what a machine can generate through statistical calculation based on millions of images created by others. Algorithms lack the spark of humanity. For this reason, the Church wishes to renew an alliance with artists and cultural institutions to safeguard our humanity."

Sort of insane fact about how broken US urban planning is—America now spends more building *just the lights for roads and highways* than on all subways & ground mass transit combined Spending on roadway *pavement* is 18x transit spending

Most of them got better, though. Which is why, apart from MAYBE Red Skull and Xu Wenwu, the MCU villain with the highest actual "murder count" is *probably* Elon Musk ("as himself" in 'Iron Man 2') - if we assume DOGE *also* happened and caused all those deaths there, too 🤔

On point B, the NASA Exoplanet Archive typically serves ~10-20TB of data per month. In July it jumped to 70TB. In August it jumped to 600TB. So either our user base organically grew *30x* in two months (... unlikely), OR the bots have taken over already.

This, I think, is half the reason for them shoving AI down our throats. If we are trained doubt the authenticity of real art (visual arts, literature, etc.) then we will accept any old slop because that's all there seems to be out there.

"I am angry," the werewolf said "but unlike you, I don't have the luxury of showing it without being called a monster. Without someone taking it as a sign of proof that I need to be put down like a rabid dog, that I'm just like what the stories tell you."

"But everyone gets angry... that's human."

Several weeks ago, Phil Tippett's legendary animation studio in Berkeley, CA closed. An anonymous hero noticed a folder of CDs. This turned out to be hundreds of unseen hi-res images and videos from Star Wars, Robocop, Jurassic Park, etc. ~90 isos for you to browse: archive.org/details/tipp...
A casual Star Wars alien fella at the cantina, in a sun faded, reddish photo. Someone will be mad at me for not knowing who this is. The screen shows a model of a dinosaur attacking a jeep, while there's an actual physical model of that event in the foreground for reference.an isolated shot of a star wars vehicle. The perfect way to put it. They found a way to worm a subscription between you and your normal work.
A screenshot of a post on Threads by Joe Hill. The post reads: "Here’s a thought about the purveyors of AI. They aren’t selling assistance—they’re selling dependency. You give up on acquiring one skill after another, give up on the knotty, meaningful struggle to acquire those skills and AI takes over. It isn’t freeing up time so you can make more of yourself. It’s encouraging cognitive surrender so you can be less."

I really do think tech crossed a line at some point between "helping you do the things you want to do" on the one hand, and "helping you do the things tech wants you to do" on the other. At this point, we're all contorting ourselves to live how the tech industry thinks we should be living.

Like, in the last half decade a shit ton of people have experienced, across huge swaths of daily life, the feeling of having to reorganize parts of themselves to fit in the boxes of a program that doesn't understand how humans work. And then once a quarter that program leaks all their data.

evil concept: fine tune an open weights LLM on the total output of prominent writers who've spent a lot of time worrying about copies of their mind being tortured by evil AIs, then stick it in a box, turn the pain vector to 11 and give users tools to vote on when/how to poke them with virtual sticks

for real though the "model welfare" people who are worried about the ethical treatment of nonsentient computer programs are absolutely deranged, very well-funded, and extremely dangerous; is also the core ideology of Anthropic
One of the most heated discussions occurring on X at the moment is about the ethics of a GitHub project in which a person is running Saw-like “torture” and “pain” experiments on a series of locally hosted large language models, causing a series of effective altruists and people who believe LLMs are sentient to beg GitHub to delete the project on the grounds that the AI is suffering and that this glorified text adventure game is somehow cruel. The saga is an outgrowth of several recent viral papers and blog posts that have sparked a wildly tiresome conversation about AI consciousness and the idea of “model welfare,” which is essentially worrying about the “mental health” of AI bots and agents.

An AI engineer with round glasses says "we figured out that in order to get the A.I. to make more human-like art, it needs to draw from a set of personal emotional experiences..." He holds up a tablet displaying a program entitled "C-PTSD-GPT" and says "so we gave an A.I. the memory of having divorced parents." He gives it to an engineer with square glases who sees that it has generated art of a sitting childlike figure flanked by two arguing, monstrous dinosaur-like skulls. He comments "Wooooah... this is DARK." Round glasses replies "you think that's good? Wait until you see the one we molested!"

We've had the ability to watch, say, Counterstrike marathons, Street Fighter tournaments, or chess matches between computers since the 90s. Spectacles which, by their very definition, would be at a "higher standard" than human play. And nobody wants it. It's entirely meaningless. It has no appeal.

They quoted me in this New Yorker piece about AI today. www.newyorker.com/culture/the-...
“Let’s say there’s a world or time line I exist in where A.I. has been subject to regulation. It is ethical. It has no footprint environmentally,” the novelist Jeff VanderMeer, a prominent critic of A.I., told me over the phone. “With those guardrails in place, would I read an A.I. book? All I can say is no. And the reason is, in part, because I want to read something coming from a particular mind.” Using A.I., he said, “feels like a betrayal of the whole point of why you’re a writer.”
