Often when people write pieces like this I think what they are saying but not saying is that men would read more if women read less. If the bare act of reading was coded masculine. As you say, there are plenty of macho books for men, but that isn’t getting men to read.

Great stuff from the Telegraph. archive.ph/r2nTA
A 29-year-old woman, who wished to remain anonymous, said the high levels of unemployment were “noticeable” in the area.
“When you go into Somali town, as we call it, you just see people outside in the cafes,” she said, gesturing down the road, before adding: “It annoys me, they are loitering around and doing nothing.”
Addressing her own career path, the 29-year-old said: “I can’t work at the moment because of my mental health. Of course I want to work, I went to uni and studied English Literature for two years. I want to be a writer.”

An occasional reminder that when scientists put a frog in a pot of water and started nudging the temperature up, the frog left the water. Hopped out. No Boil I. You see, kids, real frogs aren't stupid enough to describe what we're in. They had to make up special *dumbass* frogs or it wouldn't work.

Oh aye, wildlife on British coinage "is a denial of history", is it now?
A heap of farthings from 1941, all of them showing a rather evil looking wren. For clarity, that's the bird, not the Royal Navy's feminine side. Of course in 1941 the sort of person now trying to turn this into a culture war would be happier trying to change British coinage into something more... Reichsmark shaped.

Today's work includes writing a short piece on Norwegian folk-belief concerning the magpie. One such belief is that around Saint Olaf's feast-day (July 29), the magpies all visit Saint Olaf in order to be weighed. Those that weigh less than a quarter of a kilo are given to the Devil.

And I think we are in for a VERY rough two years at least, in ways that are extremely difficult to predict with specificity. We will have a destructive president who may shift in the post-midterms to simply working to exact revenge on what he sees as an ungrateful electorate.

People are discussing how Halloween candy is so terrible these days. A reminder that alot of the candy we eat is made with women’s prison labor. Russell Stover’s factory in Kansas busses in 150 women a day via a convict leasing program to staff their candy factory.
Russell Stover has begun using prison labor to make candy in
Kansas
A Russell Stover candy factory in Kansas has begun hiring incarcerated workers through a work release program, Eoin Higgins reports in his newsletter, The Flashpoint. About 150 women are bussed in from the Topeka Correctional Facility and paid $14 an hour, but the prison keeps some of their wages for room and board, taxes, transportation, and other expenses. When all is said and done, they take home less than $6 per hour. These deductions are high, but elsewhere in the country, they're even higher: In our May series on prison
