Again though: National care service, ‘tough choices’ on triple lock, electoral reform, devolution, more public control of utilities, reopening red lines on Europe and (hopefully?) avoiding silly tax commitments is a good & coherent manifesto. But it should have been the 2024 manifesto.

Definitely one of most self-confident & coherent speeches from a political leader in recent years. The full range of Burnhamism there - public control, political reform, social care - plus a gamble on triple lock. Something for every bit of the Labour’s electoral coalition

Just looked at the Haaretz election tracker, and even if you include Ra'am the Zionist opposition bloc doesn't make it to 61. Wonder what would happen in this scenario.

Refreshing to hear Burnham say that “everyone” will need to contribute to a National Care Service rather than pretending that the wealthy alone can fund a European-style state.

Not an Arabic speaker, but I can't overstate just how beautiful and moving Fairuz's 'Nassam Aleyna El Hawa' is. The yearning for return to one's homeland is something that it captures perfectly, and that resonates with millions across the Arab world.

The Guardian's Experiences section is incredibly bipolar. One moment you'll have a heart-wrenching story about how a woman shattered their pelvis, and then there'll be one about how someone spent 50k on cloning their dog.

"This is not my Zionism" writes the president of the UK Jewish Board of Deputies today. Good for you, but this is the Zionism that exists. Is it about time to start treating Israel as a real state and not as a fairy tale?

In an interesting little tidbit, the Norwegian Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide tells the Times of Israel that Biden would have reacted more harshly and taken more aggressive action against countries sanctioning Israeli settlements in the West Bank than Trump.

Rep Castro becomes second Democratic of Congress to explicitly call for a ban on trade with Israeli settlements goods and services. Van Hollen called on Biden to implement a ban in 2024 but was ignored.
The United Kingdom's decision to impose sanctions and a trade ban on settlements is a step in the right direction.
The expansion of Israeli settlements is an ugly land grab carried out through violence and terrorism.
Any American President serious about achieving peace should do the same.

Worth noting that this law specifically prohibits not just boycotts of Israel within the Green Line but also boycotts of Israeli Jewish settlements in illegally-occupied East Jerusalem, the West Bank and Golan Heights. These 33 Dems, all of whom call themselves two-staters, voted for it anyway.

A lot of people complaining to Nathan that this isn't what the Western liberal or Israeli advocates of two states mean when they talk about partition, but here is "two-stater" Israeli politician Yair Lapid's description of what a two state solution would look like from 2024.
For most advocates of separation, the answer to this dilemma has been to maintain Israel’s overriding control over the entire territory. This position was detailed in March by Yair Lapid—a centrist Israeli politician—who called for a two-state solution “that consists of a power advantage in our favor, that creates two political entities that are not equal in power, or in value. One is a demilitarized Palestinian state, that is small and dependent on us, and [the other is] a strong Israel that has regained its self-confidence.” But this is no two-state solution at all. Instead, it would leave Palestinians’ lives and livelihoods in the hands of Israeli institutions that have consistently shown flagrant disregard for them. It is a vision of perpetual domination and conflict: the opposite of mutual self-determination and peaceful coexistence.

This is what I mean when I say that a certain kind of media arse cannot see a difference between “conceding you were wrong/made a mistake/behaved badly” and “being dragged screaming to the axeman”. The idea of conceding even an inch to the dirty hippies is an *intolerable* affront, a burning horror.

Would the Left not be more successful if it only focused on economic redistribution and not social progressivism? The answer is no. People who want redistribution also want “woke” policies. One could know that if one engaged with the research. But then one couldn’t write the same article every year.
