On the flip side, I think people are missing how much of the datacenter build out is not AI. AWS has an obscene margin and is capacity-limited. About 10% of datacenter demand is the AI companies.

another researcher accuses OpenAI of training on conversations and then claiming a breakthrough
Valerio Capraro @ValerioCapraro

BREAKING: OpenAl might have stolen another major proot.
In a detailed Mastodon post, which I report in full in the comments, Andreas Thom presents several pieces of evidence suggesting that OpenAl may have trained Astra on conversations in which he and Gábor Kun were working on Gromov's soficity conjecture, one of the ten problems OpenAl later announced Astra had solved.
I know Andreas. We met several times early in our careers. He is an exceptional mathematician, a leading expert on sofic and hyperlinear groups, and one of the most respected scholars in the field. He has spent two decades working on this problem.
If his account is correct, this is not a minor dispute over attribution. It would mean that unpublished human work was absorbed into a model and then presented to the world as a breakthrough by the model itself. And if the allegations raised by Levent Alpöge, Tristan Buckmaster, and now Andreas Thom are all substantiated, we are no longer looking at isolated incidents.
We may be looking at one of the greatest intellectual scandals in the history of science.
Al is not discovering new mathematics.
Al is stealing human discovery.

@ZelenskyyUa
It was from Russia that the first missiles and the first drones came, and they crossed our country’s border from Russian airspace. This escalation cannot and will not remain confined to Ukrainian territory.

Today, we want to warn every airline that uses Russian airspace, every insurer, and everyone who still uses Russia’s key airports: Russian airspace is becoming completely unsafe. Ukraine does not threaten civilian aviation as such – not a single civilian aircraft. There will simply be drones in Russia’s skies on a scale that has to be taken into account. Although the Russian authorities are not properly informing people about this, Russian airspace will effectively be closing – the war started by Russia is closing its skies.

We in Ukraine do not want innocent lives to be lost. That is why we are warning our partners: the safe days in Russia’s skies are over. It is important that this is heard by the ambassadors of countries represented here in Ukraine, as well as by ambassadors working in Moscow. Every one of them knows exactly what Russia’s war means for our country and our people, and they must convey this information to their capitals. It is important that the airlines currently flying to airports primarily in Moscow, St. Petersburg, and other key destinations in Russia hear this as well.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine and our other institutions will provide international organizations with full information about the dangers in Russian airspace. Drone-infested skies are no place for civilian aviation.

From the evening address.

Rebuilding the BQE is a bad investment. But letting the structure fall down is worse. The problem isn't that Mamdani isn't changing the status quo, it's that the status quo won the long game because DeBlasio and Adams didn't want to deal with it. Mamdani had no choice at this point but to rebuild.

Primary polls have historically been rather unreliable, and a surge in new primary voters means turnout assumptions matter more than usual

But what if Warsh is injecting uncertainty premia *on purpose*?
But if you’re a Fed Chair who believes financial markets are places for grown-up price discovery, but have been mollycoddled such that risk premia and volatility have been squeezed out — in the process pulling in far higher levels of leverage across the financial system than would be appropriate absent inferred policy support — you’re going to expect any attempt to back the truck out of this paradigm will lead to higher risk premia (aka lower prices) across asset markets.

You’ll also know that pushing uncertainty premium into markets is a form of monetary tightening. Granted, injecting uncertainty premia into markets isn’t the sort of thing that any central banker we can think of has tried before. But it sort of provides some quantum of internal coherence to Warsh’s comments and actions.

At a press conference in the Bronx, Mamdani listed some of the onerous policies getting the axe. Bodega owners will no longer need a separate license to sell the same products outside the store - like fruit and flowers - as inside.
Restaurants will no longer need a
"superfluous" frozen dessert permit to sell ice-cream on top of the permit already required to sell food. Barber shops will no longer have to renew their permit every year, instead doing so every three years. Street fair vendor permit fees will be reduced, restaurant inspections will be sped up, and equipment registration fees will be eliminated for a year.
