I don't like coffee, but I still drink caffeine. It is sometimes a struggle to find alternative canned/bottled caffeinated drinks that don't have large amounts of sugar or other sweeteners in it, especially if I'm just in some random store!

I have a new example to use next time I need to do my rant about how signature matching is woo-woo pseudoscience that has no good place in how we run elections.

The whole Astros playoff series is on Peacock? This feels like punishment for making the playoffs without a winning record.

LOLOL the Astros did it. AL West Champions. Worst record in baseball to ever make the playoffs in a regular-length season, but at least they don't have a losing record. Onward!

I'm boring; I'd probably just complain about how neither of my Senate candidates have talked about how they would evaluate judicial nominees, particularly recommendations they send to the president.

!!! A 5-4 vote from the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals (supreme court for crimes) that the petition appealing the reversal of her conviction was improvidently granted. Big deal, and I'm so happy for Crystal Mason and voting rights generally.

Kind of wild that the Democratic candidate for Governor of Texas, who currently represents arguably the most left-leaning legislative district in the state, just came out with an ad featuring a Jan. 6er supporting her.

We're watching HBO's The Gilded Age right now in my household, and S2 features an opera storyline. So it's very funny to imagine all those characters reacting to this.

Man, the chance that the winner of the AL West will have a losing record is now pretty damn high. A good chance it's the Rangers or Astros, meaning either my team or the team a handful of friends root for... So, uh, how much does one root for their team in the playoffs if they are so undeserving?

It's sad because the new kid actors don't deserve this, and in an alternate universe I could imagine myself pretty pumped for an HBO remake. But nope, not gonna do it.

One side of this war has an elected legislature but it doesn't really have any power compared to the supreme leader and the council of guardian jurists, and the other is Iran.

Big local election opinion out of the Texas today. Galveston County attempted to redistrict its county commissioner court seats over the summer - after the primary. The Texas Supreme Court just directed Galveston County to use its maps that it used during the primary. txcourts.gov/media/146331...

Do courts still use @scotusplaces.bsky.social's "cleaned up" parenthetical? I feel like it was trendy for a few years but I don't really see it much with new opinions. I was just reading a 2018 case and saw the parenthetical - it looked like a relic.

To be honest I have had no strong opinions here; I've watched the WI returns more like one watching a big time but wild sports match for which they don't have a rooting interest. I mean, I dislike their opponent in the next round, so I want the winner to survive injury-free, etc., but otherwise...

Peggy Flanagan, tonight's biggest winner for progressives vs. moderates, seems more emblematic of the likely future of the Democratic Party and even its left flank than Abdul El Sayad or Francesca Hong or Graham Platner ... and yet she has gotten a fraction of the coverage.

They asked about the main purpose of the US Constitution without giving a single possible choice that is how the US Constitution would answer the question in its very Preamble.
To the best of your knowledge, what is the main purpose of the U.S. Constitution?

To establish and limit the powers of government - 929 - 41%
To declare independence from Great Britain - 393 - 17%
To create the presidency, Congress, and Supreme Court - 274 - 12%
To list all federal laws - 157 - 7%
To create the two major political parties - 95 - 4%
Not sure - 404 - 18%

It seemed like Trump's speech yesterday was a load of nothing, but it turns out it was the starting gun for his administration to get going on election maneuvers. Mullin's statement is worse than anything in the speech. Our local US Attorney put out a statement about election stuff. Hold on tight.

The little girl was still in Bluey pajamas.

No older than 3, she was trying to smell the flowers.

At her side, a pink rolling bag.

Her father, Joan Sebastian Guerrero, had just been fatally shot and yanked from a car he’d been driving. Now, he lay handcuffed in the street, where he would remain for five hours.

“You took her dad, you took her dad!” a woman nearby yelled, according to Cecelia Humiston, 22, who witnessed the interaction in Biddeford on Monday morning.

The claim that deaths in Africa decreased after USAID was cut (and implicitly BECAUSE of the cuts) is similar to the claim I saw the other day that Gaza's population has increased since Oct. 7, 2023. Crazy pills everywhere, I see.

the use of “performative” as an insult here is why these people are losing their primaries. yes, voters want you to perform their anger and disgust! they want representatives to represent their symbolic interests! the idea that good representation is necessarily quiet and unobtrusive is wrong!

KBJ provides a useful, though non-exhaustive, hitlist of the cases we must overrule to fully vindicate the 14th Amendment's promise of an "anticaste, antisubordination reset for the Nation."
I suspect, though, that JUSTICE THOMAS and I disagree about when
and how that promise has been denied by this Court. My list is long (and
sadly only getting longer). For a sampling, consider: Civil Rights Cases,
109 U. S. 3 (1883); Plessy v. Ferguson, 163 U. S. 537 (1896); De Lima v.
Bidwell, 182 U. S. 1 (1901) (otherwise known as the Insular Cases);
Downes v. Bidwell, 182 U. S. 244 (1901) (same); Korematsu v. United
States, 323 U. S. 214 (1944); Milliken v. Bradley, 418 U. S. 717 (1974);
McCleskey v. Kemp, 481 U. S. 279 (1987); Parents Involved in Community Schools v. Seattle School Dist. No. 1, 551 U. S. 701 (2007); Shelby
County v. Holder, 570 U. S. 529 (2013); Students for Fair Admissions,
Inc. v. President and Fellows of Harvard College, 600 U. S. 181 (2023)
(SFFA); Louisiana v. Callais, 608 U. S. ___ (2026).

This upsets me more than the the bad legal analysis of the 4 losing justices. We have at least 4 justices who have a truly grotesque regressive and repressive belief on what America is at its core. True, no one else joined Alito's dissent, but their votes tell the story.

Man, another sigh of relief on birthright citizenship. But only 5-4 on the constitutional question? So ominous. So dangerous. And after a large spate of 6-3 conservative decisions, too. That cohort cannot be allowed to keep so much power in perpetuity.
