Ever wondered why China builds both the dirtiest and cleanest energy generation at record levels at the same time? Energy security is why, excellently explained in detail here: youtu.be/qde4r4_uMU0?...

I worded the post misleading (the video covers it well) and agree that this is more on Germany than on China. They decided to sacrifice solar for automotive and even that only bought an additional decade.

Besides land, it would probably also reduce the relative cost of installation (labour and hardware) which might be just as or more relevant.

Regarding the unfamiliarity of what to expect and how to deal with it, "moved from some colder climate" is pretty important. Climate change often means you have to adapt even without moving (i.e. Northern Europeans installing AC in 100 year old houses)

The graph covers a decade and all of the EU, so day to day or region to region variations aren't shown. Demand somewhat follows daylight and thus solar while short term (hours to days) storage has improved a lot so it seems that wind would really help with seasonal changes and cover for solar.

I think I maybe undersold how gross the “prank” played on this employee was. Imagine you come into work, try to help customers, and later realize they've racked up 500,000+ views on social media by harassing you and your coworkers.
In August, Toru Hinkle was stocking shelves at their job at Target when they noticed two customers and asked if they needed any help. The men requested a price check on an item — but even after Hinkle told them the item was $20, the customers asked for the price again and again.

“After a while, I realized that I’m basically being pranked, and I noticed the glasses,” Hinkle says, referring to the frames with a blinking light. They were the Ray-Ban Meta glasses, and the customers were filming. Hinkle eventually called a store manager over, but the pranksters antagonized her, too — asking the price repeatedly, deliberately misgendering Hinkle as “ma’am” and the female manager as “sir.” At one point, Hinkle attempted to stop the recording by saying “Meta, stop recording” out loud, hoping to trigger a voice control setting. The customers pretended to be confused by the accusation that they were recording Hinkle.

The confrontation made Hinkle queasy. “I felt like this pit in my stomach just started to build up,” Hinkle recalls. “After this whole exchange happened, the rest of the shift, I was just quiet and didn’t even talk to anyone because I was just so shaken up by it.” Another customer called the police, Hinkle says, and the two men were escorted out of the store. Target declined to comment.

Rather unhelpfully, categorisation of "endangered", "threatened" etc, depends on relative population change. For "endangered" it's ~"population size reduction of ≥70% over the last 10 years or 3 generations". So if 2015 & 2025 counts show the same tiny number, it magically becomes "least concern".

I would love to know what percentage of the AI energy or water use is caused by this "forced" or at least unintended uses. If AI is used in a intentional and productive matter, the energy use is justified. If AI is used for something that's effectively a google search it can be wasteful.

I also think a lot of people (inlcuding myself) get their bad impressions on AI from i.e. the google AI search result or Copilot that they didn't even intentionally use. Very different from a state of the art AI used in a valid application.
