By 1980, when his presidency ended, Carter had completely transformed the federal bench, appointing 41 women and 57 racial minorities as federal judges—a 500% increase in the number of women serving on the federal bench and a nearly 200% increase in the number of nonwhite federal judges.

There is no action more powerful or righteous than sparing someone’s life, and today President Biden is doing just that. My full statement on his historic death penalty clemency action:
“There is no action more powerful or righteous than sparing someone’s life, and today President Biden is doing just that. The President’s decision to commute the death sentences of 37 individuals on federal death row is a historic and groundbreaking act of compassion that will save lives, address the deep racial disparities in our criminal legal system, and send a powerful message about redemption, decency, and humanity.

“The death penalty is a racist, flawed, and fundamentally unjust punishment that has no place in any society. For far too long, it has been disproportionately weaponized against Black and brown communities, exacerbated systemic inequities, and failed to make America any safer—which is why we’ve urged the president for years to work with us to abolish the federal death penalty. By taking this historic action, President Biden is demonstrating the type of moral leadership this moment demands.“This victory belongs to the organizers, advocates, and impacted families from every walk of life who work relentlessly to end the death penalty, and everyone who has worked with us to press for a more just criminal legal system. It is their unwavering commitment to the dignity and humanity of every person that has made this moment possible.

“I thank President Biden for heeding our calls and leading with compassion, and I encourage him to continue using his clemency authority in the final days of his presidency.”

Incredible news! Montana’s Supreme Court just affirmed that the state’s gender affirming care ban is likely unconstitutional. This makes the state the first state Supreme Court to rule that trans medical care is protected. This applies REGARDLESS of what the US Supreme Court does.
targets, the District Court reasonably concluded that the balance of the equities tips toward
preliminary relief pending full consideration of the merits. Its analysis of the last two
preliminary injunction factors was not arbitrary or unreasonable. The court did not
manifestly abuse its discretion, and its injunction was not overbroad.
156 Finally, both parties have submitted notices of supplemental authority, citing recent
cases considering challenges to various laws regarding gender-affirming care. Without
exception, the additional authority pertains to claims grounded in the equal protection
clause or otherwise based on alleged unlawful discrimination. Some of the authorities also
reference new developments in research and evidence that was not part of the record
presented to the District Court in the preliminary injunction proceedings. Because, on the
record here, the District Court's conclusions on Montana's express privacy protections are
sufficient to uphold its preliminary injunction, we affirm on that basis. The parties will
have the opportunity during the merits proceeding for full development of the record, where their experts may offer insight on any new research, and for briefing on the current case law relative to their claims.
CONCLUSION
157 The District Court made no error of law and did not manifestly abuse its discretion.
We affirm its grant of a preliminary injunction on the basis of Plaintiffs' right to privacy claim. The case will proceed to trial, at which point the District Court will finally resolve the disputed facts and issue a final determination on the constitutional issues presented.

This interview with Nikki Giovanni from earlier this year should be required reading. oxfordamerican.org/web-only/nik...
I think the transgender kids are the bravest kids right now that we see; they're as brave as my generation was in breaking down segregation. They're breaking down-I don't have the word for it right now-but it's gender prejudice, and [the idea that] somebody has decided that they can tell you who you are, what your name should be, and how you should look.

And those youngsters are saying, "No, I can decide who I am, what my name should be." Everybody's mad at me like, You should be a girl because we've decided you're a girl. And they say, "Well, who the hell are you?" I can decide that I'm a boy. And if it makes me happy, what does it mean to you? And I can decide that my name is John. And if you don't like that my name is Geraldine, why can't you name yourself? And if the people who know you and love you-or have to talk to you, maybe they don't even love you but they have to talk to you -you can tell them, “This is my name, and I would like to be referred to in that way."
