I've been WORKING so don't know why people are debating the merits of AI transcription, but there absolutely are options that don't train their models on your data. I pay $750 a year for mine, which is expensive (but a tax writeoff!) and has allowed me to do 37 interviews this week.

a lot of writers think being “thorough” means showing their work by quoting 1,000 people and trying to cram every possible point in. imo Nikole Hannah-Jones and Rachel Aviv are the masters at doing the opposite: stripping everything away to get at the heart of the matter.

The way Annie Dillard reframed the idea of the role of “discipline” in writing really shaped my understanding of the job — work, she wrote, “does not require discipline. It creates its own discipline.” I cannot recommend The Writing Life highly enough. RIP to the best. bookshop.org/a/109816/978...

How we spend our days is, of course, how we spend our lives. What we do with this hour, and that one, is what we are doing. A schedule defends from chaos and whim. It is a net for catching days. It is a scaffolding on which a worker can stand and labor
with both hands at sections of time. A schedule is a mock-up of reason and order
—willed, faked, and so brought into being; it is a peace and a haven set into the wreck of time; it is a lifeboat on which you find yourself, decades later, still living. Each day is the same, so you remember the series afterward as a blurred and powerful pattern.

There's a common notion that self-discipline is a freakish peculiarity of writers—that writers differ from other people by possessing enormous and equal portions of talent and willpower. They grit their powerful teeth and go into their little rooms. I think that's a bad misunderstanding of what impels the writer. What impels the writer is a deep love for and respect for language, for literary forms, for books. It's a privilege to muck about in sentences all morning. It's a challenge to bring off a powerful effect, or to tell the truth about something. You don't do it from willpower; you do it from an abiding passion for the field.

I found it weird that this article doesn’t say what Galliano’s “past antisemitic and racist statements” are, especially at a time when a lot of not-antisemitic stuff is getting categorized that way, so I looked it up, and, uh, how did anyone ever think this exhibition was a good idea.

The final straw for Dior appears to have been the video, reportedly shot in La Perle in December, showing Galliano telling two women: "I love Hitler. People like you would be dead. Your mothers, your forefathers would all be fucking gassed."

A lot of the time, envy is anger in disguise. We envy because of some injury that's already happened to us, not because of the life goals that haven't.
In other words-you know what the source of your envy isn't? Your white whale, babe. You know this.
So do l.

Lots of women have a Denise or Denises, perhaps a Dennis or two. But there are countless other injustices where terrible mentors came from: time, loss, death, illness, rot, weakness, cowardice, avarice, rape, caprice, abandonment, betrayal.
Idiots and takers. Fascists. Addicts and enablers.
Grifters, racists, and bores. People who say they'll choose the hard right over the easy wrong until they realize that the first thing requires effort. The fact that we as a species are at best one millimeter away from the violent and territorial olains apes from which we evolved.
