Data on Chinese secondary school students show that those using generative AI spent less time on their homework, homework scores rose, but their exam scores fell. The effect grows as more material is learned and students become more proficient with AI tools. cepr.org/voxeu/column... #EconSky
Figure: Median homework and exam scores by homework completion time; bands show interquartile ranges. The red line denotes AI users and the blue dashed line non-users. Shows how at equal homework time, AI users and non-users achieve similar exam scores.

Generative AT tools can help students complete assignments faster and achieve better scores. But completing these tasks is not the goal; learning from them is. This column uses data on over 25,000 7th to 12th grade students in China to examine how self-directed use of generative AI affects their learning. Time spent on homework for students who used AI went down and homework scores went up, but their exam scores fell. While the initial effect is small, it grows as students become more proficient with AI tools and as more course material is learned after adoption, suggesting that existing short-duration studies may underestimate the long-run learning costs of using generative AI.

🚨Elsevier forces out Games and Economic Behavior (GEB) Editor, entire editorial board has resigned, current board only handling new submissions until Nov. 14 #econsky
    Dear Advisory Editor of GEB
We are very sorry to be the bearers of bad news for GEB.
I learned from Elsevier on Wednesday July 28 that, contrary to my expressed willingness to continue, my 3-year contract will not be renewed.
"Moving towards a closer alignment with Elsevier strategic priorities and publishing policies" was offered as the motive for this decision. Requests for explanations, first by me, then in a collective letter by the other six Editors, were dismissed by Elsevier which simply reaffirmed its legal power to make such decisions.
Elsevier then started precipitously its own search for new Editors without input of the Editorial Board.
By Friday August 14 all seven Editors have sent their resignation, requiring a 3-month advance notice.
Therefore, we will continue to manage as before the papers currently under review and the new submissions until Saturday November 14. After this date we will only complete the evaluation of papers still waiting an editorial decision.

So far, Chile's 2022 Platform Work Law has failed to regulate minimum pay and working hours. However, it has led to some substitution of informal self-employed by formal ones and to a moderate rise in social security coverage among those workers. Omar Bamieh et al. cepr.org/voxeu/column... #EconSky
The time series behaviour around the reform shown in the figure suggests a clear turning point in employment composition following the PWL. Relative to the pre-reform period, the share of informal workers declines steadily by 16.1 percentage points, a drop that mirrors the surge in the share of formal contractors by 16.8 percentage points. By contrast, the share of formal employees hardly changes and nor do relative wages vary.

Chile’s 2022 Platform Work Law was the first reform to address concerns about independent contractors of platform delivery and transportation services, a sector in which informality is pervasive across Latin America. This column takes advantage of Chilean survey data on platform work to evaluate the impact of the law. The findings suggest that so far it has failed in regulating minimum pay and working hours and in increasing the share of employees. However, it has led to some substitution of informal self-employed by formal ones and to a moderate rise in social security coverage among these workers.
