What do the earliest organisms tell us about where life began on earth? This fantastic paper addresses this issue through analyses that expose early metabolism, & what the environment contributed to kick start it. Even if wrong it is worth reading for the clear introduction to metabolism.

Micrographs of two Drosophila melanogaster pupal cases. The left pupal case is slightly larger than the right. The left pupal case is marked uncrowded, and the right is marked crowded. A 1mm line is above the pupal cases for scale. Both are males reared on low nutrition; the left is from a vial with 50 larvae, the right is from a vial with 200 larvae.

Mitochondria produce lactate to vent redox pressure
Conventionally viewed as a waste product or a cytosolic pyruvate source, recent findings suggest that lactate may also directly contribute to mitochondrial oxidative metabolism. Using an intramitochondrial lactate biosensor, Rauseo et al. instead find that energized mitochondria are producers of lactate, which buffers mitochondrial redox to mitigate reactive oxygen species production.
