Our built infrastructure robs kids of their freedom of independent mobility. Streets are dominated by oversized vehicles, piloted by aggressive and distracted drivers where one mistake can turn lethal. We sacrificed child development to subsidize the auto industry.

I'm passionately against AI slop. I also use LLMs constantly to make tools and workflows art. To me, there is no contradiction because 'using AI' isn't one activity. Writing a prompt and building tools are different acts, with a fundamentally different relationship to conceptualisation and creation.

This seems like a privacy disaster. On top of any existing ORCA tracking that currently exists this ADDS exit tapping and forces youth to use identifiable cards even when they owe no fare. Hello, I'm a federal judge, tell me all the kids that went to pride please. 🤬 I hope I'm wrong about this.

Thinking on "high integrity" research, we push students to do slow science, to be upfront about limitations, to balance learning with exploiting. While obviously moral, it must also be the case that by doing this students eventually "win", else you're just creating a generation where... 1/2

I know I write a post like this every month, but the degree to which the refusal to believe that maybe this is not just a fake bubble thing is getting weirder all the time. And the belief that it is fake removes important perspectives from AI policy making as people just wait for it to go away.

AI: virtually no subject provokes such vitriol in my communities. I can grant the haters many of its harms, but their solutions leave much to be desired. I fear for the future even as I wonder at the future we are living. And so, dear hater, I must write: shaping.systems/blog/ai-suck...

“AI is a bubble because I don’t want the consumer AI garbage being shoved my way” that intuition makes sense but the business value of AI isn’t in these moronic consumer applications the business value of AI is in business applications. and Anthropic is seeing a serious revenue ramp to prove it

when we mourn le guin, we mourn one of our greatest writers & thinkers. but we also mourn one of our all-time greatest haters
All you do is take all the sex out, and use little short words, and little dumb ideas, and don't be too scary, and be sure there's a happy ending. Right? Nothing to it. Write down. Right on.

If you do all that, you might even write Jonathan Livingston Seagull and make twenty billion dollars and have every adult in America reading your book.

But you won't have every kid in America reading your book. They will look at it, and they will see straight through it, with their clear, cold, beady little eyes, and they will put it down, and they will go away. Kids will devour vast amounts of garbage (and it is good for them) but they are not like adults: they have not yet learned to eat plastic.

troubling aspect of ai rollout in the wider economy is how haphazardly rushed it was by leaders with no concept of timing or practicality, so now people are convinced it's useless just in time for it to get really good and will be blindsided by businesses that took a slower more considerate approach

A WHOLE CIVILIZATION
WILL DIE TONIGHT
My son needs lunch, and I have to put his backpack together, but a whole civilization will die tonight, so I'm wondering if they've closed their schools.
Like, a snow day, maybe, except instead of snow it's
"keep your children home so if you die, you die together" — instead of "well open back up once the plows have cleared" it's
"we don't know if we'll be here tomorrow, hold your babies tight."
It's just "talk" I'm told, which I've been told before.
"It's how the president makes his deals." But I've never heard anyone talk about other human beings this way, and I'm not certain I can look my son in the eyes if we all agree to stomach it one more time.
A civilization will die tonight, but as I zip up his backpack and kiss him off to school I think: if this is what we call leadership then I'm not entirely sure ours isn't already dead.

Look, if this country ever gets through this, MAGA memorabilia needs to be treated like Nazi memorabilia. Trump's signature should be akin to scarlet letter. Having a MAGA hat in your house should be like having Klan robes or family photos taken at a lynching.

Is this a good time to once again repost this Something Positive strip that Dear Uncle Randy made a few years back? Answer: Unfortunately, it is. It shouldn't have to be, but it is.
A strip from Something Positive including Mike and his son (forgot the name, sorry, uncle Randy). The drawings is mainly of Mike packing up books, the main point here is the dialogue, which is as follows:

Panel 1:
Son: Orson Scott Card? JK Rowling? These are your favourite books, dad!

Panel 2:
Mike: They're pretty hateful towards gay and trans people and actively work to make their lives worse. I don't wanna support them anymore.

Panel 3:
Son: Can't you just separate the work from the author.
Mike: Some people probably can and I sure tried.
Son: What changed?

Panel 4:
Mike: I realised "separate the work from the author" is easy for me to say when I'm not one of the people they dehumanize.
