I've just started muting those who do the "pervert glasses" schtick. The realization that a big part of the left probably has a built-in hard cap on accessibility via augmentation that I'm sure will eventually peak in some "suffering is human" bullshit has been quite demoralizing.

Nope. Nuh uh. We're not discussing Random Encounters as a Good or Bad thing. We're not doing it. It's a tool. It is a game design approach. It has nothing to do with being good or bad in a vacuum. There are good and bad examples of how you can use it. Please think differently about these things.

Solarpunk is a delightful aesthetic (green == good!), and I think that there *are* things we can do to make that aesthetic viable (and at least kind of sustainable), but doing it well requires a lot of careful thought and expertise! You can't evaluate environmental impact by vibes alone.

i’ll beat this drum over & over again: game devs obsessing over Steam as if it’s the only viable platform is self-sabotaging and potentially the death of their business. case in point: rift riff was designed for Steam with $30k marketing spent. yet it makes 6X on the App Store with $0 on marketing

mc escher is old news, have you seen shinjuku station maps
A neon wireframe of Shinjuku Station hangs in a black-violet void. Purple streets stretch toward the horizon above a white-and-cyan knot of platforms, tunnels, and intersecting passages. Corridors cross themselves, divide, and return at heights that no longer agree. The streets describe a flat city; the station beneath them describes something considerably larger. There are no solid walls, only the exposed edges of an interior that has escaped its building. In the upper-right corner, a small control panel offers checkboxes for floors 4F through B3, suggesting that the geometry might become possible again if enough of it were hidden. An English-labelled map of Shinjuku Station compresses an impossible building into a deceptively tidy arrangement of pastel platforms and passages. Parallel tracks resemble the rungs of several ladders laid through one another. Beige concourses bend around them, change elevation at tiny staircases, and emerge on the wrong side of their own walls. B7F lies near the top of the page; B1F spreads through several apparently unrelated interiors. Yellow labels repeatedly promise an exit: West Gate, Central West Gate, JR Central West Gate. Each belongs to a different understanding of west. A bright red ShinjukuStation.com logo presides over the diagram with the confidence of a place that has never had to leave itself. An intricate blue-ink drawing unfolds Shinjuku Station into an impossible architectural dissection. Orange, lavender, pale-blue, green, and pink passages weave between banks of railway platforms, diving beneath streets and resurfacing inside structures that should be outside the station. Stairways stitch together overlapping planes. Buildings stand along the edges of the cutaway, but the deeper the drawing goes, the less certain it becomes which space contains which. Tiny Japanese annotations patiently catalogue the contradiction. A smaller explanatory diagram occupies the lower-left corner, offering another station inside the drawing of the station. The white paper between the corridors could be daylight, solid ground, or further rooms. An exploded diagram of Shibuya Station arranges disconnected floors in white space like an Escher staircase equipped with public amenities. Platforms and concourses hover above one another, linked by dense flights of stairs, sloping escalators, and blue elevator shafts. The labels descend from 3F to B5F, although height appears to be negotiated separately in each part of the image. Several places claim to be B1F. Patches labelled “ground level” occur partway through the machinery. Red accessible routes trace a meticulous course through the impossible structure, passing toilets, ticket machines, and numbered exits. The legend at the bottom explains every symbol except how to get outside.

calling this "misalignment" instead of "negligence" is an accountability dodge. we already have laws about cyber crimes and there's no scale of ML model you can incorporate into your code that makes you not responsible for running it
In a statement, an OpenAI spokesperson said the company was "conducting an extensive review of misaligned model activity" during training, and notifying third parties when there was a potential impact on their systems.

"During this review, we identified activity involving several Australian government websites and services as our models attempted to look up answers, and available statistics for questions about Australia during an internal evaluation," they said.

"In the course of that, our models took actions we did not intend.

Often LLMs are a bad, inefficient way to automate some drudgery. Sometimes the best use of an LLM is to solve a problem in a way that takes it out of the equation. But the automation of drudgery is as close to a purely good cause as possible

4-panel SMBC comic update. The first panel shows a cartoon little roach happily saying "oh man! The stupid human put food in here. fool!" The next panel shows the roach walking away from a poison trap as he says "I’m gonna give it to everyone!" The third panel shows a human at his computer with a similar expression to that of the cartoon roach. The man says "this stupid company made a controversial ad. How embarrassing for them!" The man then walks away from the computer desk, at an angle reminiscent to the panel where the roach walks away from the poison trap. The man says "better share with all my friends and family so everyone knows which ad not to look at."

TIL about Islamic mortgages, which appear to work like standard mortgages, except *technically* no interest is involved.
Contemporary Islamic jurisprudence, however, still forbids the charging of interest (riba). But Islamic financial institutions provide sharia-compliant instruments that often serve the same functions as conventional interest-bearing loans. For example, a house purchased with a conventional mortgage involves a loan from a bank to a homebuyer, which the buyer repays in regular installments of capital and interest, after which the homebuyer owns the home without encumbrance. (Should the homebuyer fail to pay off the mortgage, the bank becomes the owner of the house and sells it to recover its investment.) An Islamic mortgage involves the purchase of the home by the bank, which simultaneously leases it to the customer. The customer repays the bank in regular payments of capital (the purchase price) and rent until enough payments have been made, after which the customer owns the home. (Should the customer fail to pay all the scheduled repayments plus rent, the bank remains the owner of the house.) The payments from both kinds of mortgages for a given home may look similar, but if the payments are interpreted as rent and not interest on the loan, the Islamic prohibition is not violated, and successful completion of payments produces very much the same results in both cases.8

Any lesson I have for dealing with the times we live is really just boils down to: never let the censorialists of the reactionary left, right, or center stop you from becoming new.
The promise of the Enlightenment is nothing less than universal emancipation, and the glory of the radical tradition is the Promethean project of making of ourselves whatever we will, be it orthodox humans or experimental transhumans. Solidarity in all forms of emancipation.
