The cluelessness of this reminds me a lot of the NFT grift. The thing about NFTs was that it was mainly something finance bros were into, and when they were trying to worm their way into gaming, their pitches were an abyssal trench of bad ideas because they couldn't grasp why people played games.

Can't help but think of this hiker-rescue story I saw earlier today
The USFS said the climbers told them they had used an artificial intelligence platform, YouTube videos and AllTrails to plan the trip. They said they relied on Al to decide what food to bring and how much food and water they would need.

The group said it packed supplies for an eight-hour climb, not its roughly 16-hour ascent. The climbers said Al recommended simple carbohydrates instead of fats because fats "take too long to digest."

"We relied too much on Al rather than our own critical thinking," the group told rangers.

This piece is excellent, one of the clearest explanations I’ve seen After 2008 I became sort of obsessed with learning about exactly how everything fell apart. I didn’t know I’d get to see an exact replay two fucking decades later
The take-or-pay compute contract - the instrument at the center of the Al build-out has a structural feature that almost no one prices: its payments do not begin at signing. They begin at delivery. A lab signs a multi-year capacity commitment today, but the payments do not start until the data center is energized, the capacity is accepted, and the contractual ramp schedule commences - an interval set not by finance, but by construction: siting, powering, and filling a gigawatt-scale campus takes 24-to-36 months from signature - mirroring the two-to-three-year teaser of a subprime ARM.

In the Renaissance people theorized, since the Aeneid is great, if you wrote poems made only of words & phrases from the Aeneid rearranged they should be great too, since a great source regurgitated should yield greatness. They produced NOTHING we still read. Thinking about that a lot lately.

Techbros seem to love Tolkien, so here's an analogy to help you understand what genAl is.
GenAl is The One Ring. You think your use is justified, b/c you don't have evil in your heart.
But it came from evil, it is intended for evil purpose, & anything you do with it will be twisted to that end.

Not just that but Tolkien also said, "Evil cannot create anything new, it can only corrupt and ruin what good forces have invented or made."
Sound familiar?

The analogy of the One Ring for GenAl is quite powerful, especially when you consider how it seduces users with the promise of easy power. That quote about evil being unable to create anything new feels particularly relevant to the way these models remix existing human art. It really makes you wonder if we're trading our creative soul for a shortcut.
