Rather difficult not to feel a bit gloomy about the state of the country atm, so I wasn’t going to make much of a thing of this anniversary this year. And then I saw this and started to cry. Because a free and united Germany in a free and united Europe was worth it. And is worth fighting for now.

I guess how problematic one thinks Perimeter is depends on the level of automaticity built into the system. That seems to be left (deliberately?) ambiguous.

The US military almost boarded a Chinese cargo ship because an intelligence analyst trusted a false AI-generated conclusion that the ship was carrying components for a nuclear-weapons program. edition.cnn.com/2026/09/18/p...
The bot fused together open-source intelligence with secret signals intelligence in government holdings and reached its fateful conclusion about the material the ship was carrying.

The analyst then used AI again to package the findings into a standard intelligence report — the kind that is trusted by military officials — and disseminated it.

The fallacy that University leaders pushing AI are falling into is thinking that the point of undergraduate research is to find things out. It isn't. What students find out is typically already generally known. The point of undergraduate research is to learn how to find things out.
