Today’s #BirdOfTheDay theme by AB is #Seabirds Post for Alt. #Airborne; any bird in flight. Saw those cranes congregating today, not yet in flight formation, flying in all directions, my impression: using the thermals to gain height, the swirls visible in pic 4, I think. Lovely sight and sounds.

Ich kannte die umgangssprachliche Bezeichnung "shrink" für Therapeut, aber wusste nicht, dass es von "head-shrinker" - "Kopf-Schrumpfer" kommt! 😁
Originally US, probably by reference to slang terms like “swelled head” for someone with delusions of grandeur; a psychiatrist would remove such delusions, thus figuratively shrinking the patient's swelled head.Originally US, probably by reference to slang terms like “swelled head” for someone with delusions of grandeur; a psychiatrist would remove such delusions, thus figuratively shrinking the patient's swelled head.

One for the alt theme for #BirdoftheDay, and #BirdStare, and the Least Bittern from the Las Gallinas trip the other day - giving me a look, but hanging around and carrying on fishing. #Birds #eck 🪶
A frontal view of a Least Bittern (Botaurus exilis) (Ixobrychus exilis) perched on vertical green reeds at the water's edge. The small heron is looking directly at the camera, its brown and white streaked plumage providing camouflage against the dense vegetation. Its long legs and large feet are visible gripping the stalks above the green, reflective water. The setting is a marshy wetland in Marin County, California.

Stargazing 5 xkcd.com/3301/
4-panel comic. (1) [Black background with person with shoulder-length hair with raised arms in front in white, with figures in gray in the background.] PERSON 1: Welcome to stargazing! I’m back, despite efforts by astronomers who hate cool space facts to cover me up so I can’t see the sky anymore! Nice try, losers! Next time buy a tarp that’s harder to chew through! (2) [Person looks toward binoculars in hand.] PERSON 1: Now, let’s spy on some stars! Does everyone have binoculars? If you don’t, find someone looking at birds and try to grab theirs. Stars are the birds of the sky. (3) [Close-up on Person but with white background.] PERSON 1: But stars aren’t the only weird lights. Sometimes the sky fills with rippling colors. That’s the sky’s screensaver. It’s very pretty, so don’t move your mouse and ruin it. (4) [Switch back to black background, person points up while figures in background look toward where she’s pointing.] PERSON 1: That blob is a comet. People used to think they were harbingers of doom. We now know they’re boring, so we have to find new reasons to use the word “harbinger.” I’m a harbinger of astronomy! Cool facts are nigh!

Interessanter ornithologischer Vortrag heute Abend, in der Diskussion hinterher gab es allerdings Beiträge, die mich an den unsterblichen "Cormorant-not-a-question"-Tweet von James B Sumner erinnerten. Musste stark an mich halten. (But with everybody German, it wouldn't have landed, pun intended.)
Yes, it was me who smuggled a large seabird into the plenary and launched it at the speaker's head with the words "Actually this is more of a cormorant than a question." I am to be considered for possible readmission to the society in 2038, which seems fair.
