Thank you so much! Wikipedia tells me its German name is "Rotes Ordensband" - "red medal ribbon". I bought a new camera for birding, but it also facilitates very nice pictures of insects, so I guess I will try to learn more about insects, too :-)

Seeing your post reminded me that I saw a huge moth on a wall today - unfortunately nothing near für scale, but at least as big as a peacock butterfly, if my impression was correct. Can you maybe identify from the pics, or are they too unprecise? (location Berlin Germany)

I love that Dorothy L. Sayers invented a Sargent portrait for her character (another detective from the golden age of detective stories), Lord Peter Wimsey. It's only a few lines when they visit the portrait gallery at Duke's Denver, but they say a lot:

Today’s #BirdOfTheDay theme by AB is #Seabirds Post for Alt. #Airborne; any bird in flight. Saw those cranes congregating today, not yet in flight formation, flying in all directions, my impression: using the thermals to gain height, the swirls visible in pic 4, I think. Lovely sight and sounds.

For Rob's #BirdOfTheDay Alt theme #Green, photos with Green in backgrounds not on birds: Hadn't seen my crow acquaintances for several weeks, yesterday this one appeared in front of me in a manner that suggested a "Ta-dah!" Look at the iridescent feathers at neck & head, post-moult, I guess!

Originally US, probably by reference to slang terms like “swelled head” for someone with delusions of grandeur; a psychiatrist would remove such delusions, thus figuratively shrinking the patient's swelled head.Originally US, probably by reference to slang terms like “swelled head” for someone with delusions of grandeur; a psychiatrist would remove such delusions, thus figuratively shrinking the patient's swelled head.

Oh, and I just recalled these picture for today’s #BirdOfTheDay theme #Raptors plus the alt. theme of #corvids. Two hooded crows, trying to chase away a buzzard. Gotta love those crows' spunkiness!

Today’s #BirdOfTheDay theme by Atlantic Birding is: #Raptors; any bird of prey This Common Buzzard yesterday in the park caused commotion by flying (hunting?) several times into tree tops. I thought Buzzards mainly hunt on the ground, mice etc. Blue & great tits in the shrubs seemed unconcerned.

Musste stark an mich halten. (But with everybody German, it wouldn't have landed, pun intended.)
Yes, it was me who smuggled a large seabird into the plenary and launched it at the speaker's head with the words "Actually this is more of a cormorant than a question." I am to be considered for possible readmission to the society in 2038, which seems fair.

Today's #BirdOfTheDay theme by Rob is #Mamas&Papas, male & female of the same species in the same photo. A pair of Great Chrested Grebes, one carries the chicks on the back, the other dives for food. IIRC in this instant a small fish ended up back in the water instead of one of the chicks' beak.

Another entry for AB's theme for #BirdOfTheDay, another jay for #Mouthful and the alt. theme #Black. I'm not sure what this jay is handling (beaking?), maybe a slug? But s/he was occupied for quite a while.

Today’s #BirdOfTheDay theme by AB is: #Mouthful; any bird with anything in its beak Alt. is #Black; any bird with black plumage The acorn just left the Jay's beak and is falling into a hole in the ground on the first pic, the jay then gathers moss for covering.

Today's #BirdOfTheDay themes by Rob: #Pigeons, any Pigeon will do, and the Alt theme is #SittingOnWateer, any bird/duck/goose/swan sitting on water. Just took some pigeon pics yesterday (the feeding stuff is not from me), and the Egyptian goose is from 3 days ago, a rather late (2nd?) brood?

Today’s #BirdOfTheDay theme by Alan is: #InFlight, any bird in flight. Alt #Grounded, any bird on natural ground. I'm going with the Alt theme: a peculiar sight, I think, a treecreeper on the ground, but then it started displaying more treecreeper-like behaviour.

Helen has chosen #BirdNaps for #BirdOfTheDay, birds napping, sleeping. Alt. is #BrightAccents This female great spotted woodpecker had worked hard, opening walnuts at her anvil (half opened/eaten walnut on the right from her) when she felt the need for a snooze, then went up in the tree for it.

Kurz vor Zerbst: Über einer Wiese/Feld tauchten viele Bienenfresser im Flug nach Insekten, im Abendlicht. In erster Linie durchs Fernglas angeschaut, atemberaubend!

Today's #BirdOfTheDay theme by Rob is #BestOfTheMonth. Not my best photos quality-wise, but the situation left me flabbergasted. A far away tree at the edge of a field - and about 25 assorted birds of prey on it, bussards, red kites and black kites, chilling & caring for their feathers.

Beautiful picture of a beautiful bird! I like about Birdoftheday that I find out about species I don't know yet! I found out the German name is Rotkopfwürger (more or less red headed strangler/butcher bird) and the "senator" in the Latin name is explained this way:
