There should be an option where you buy the hard copy of a book but pay a little surcharge on top, and also get the e-book, so you don’t have to take seven books on holiday, but at the same time you have the physical book in your library.

Despite disingenuous protestations to the contrary, this motion does EXACTLY what its fans claim to oppose - conflating Zionism with Judaism. The language around “Zionist synagogues” is so completely open ended that it will end up applying to most Jews, whether they are Zionist or not.

I see that OpenAI's messaging of "if you give us all the money on Earth we will annoy some mathematicians" is being somewhat overshadowed by Anthropic's messaging of "if you give us all the money on Earth we will kill everyone". I'm slightly worried about what a compromise position might look like.

Shocking case in Court of Appeal - bailii.org/ew/cases/EWC... Appellant detained for 3x length of sentence that could have legally been imposed. I'm not a "all IPPs are terrible" but as an IPP case goes this is appauling. 20 years for a crime that could only attract 7.

One thing I've learnt from decades practising as a barrister: there's no special body language that gives away a liar. Some witnesses are convincing when they lie, and others are shifty when they're telling the truth. The only way to know is to compare what they say with other objective evidence.

Spot on from @willhaycardiff.bsky.social in ‘Who Cares About Wales?’ I’d say you can extend the argument UK-wide. So many people in Government, HE, and wider society have lost sight of what Universities are and should be in a political-economy.
There is no way you can have a prosperous Wales without prosperous universities. More than ever, a highly educated workforce is vital and it is universities which play the biggest part in providing this.
But if we view universities merely as places for people to gain qualifications for their career and life advancement, then we, much like successive governments, miss the true value these institutions should offer.
They are economic engines in their own right, and they should be centres for creative and open debate and places that can address societal challenges, drawing in talent from around the world and building international connections. In a world where Wales is very small, they are one of the greatest forms of soft power. They should also drive positive change in the communities where they are based. Added to this, the benefit of learning for learning's sake - for the pure curiosity of it - is a fundamental part of being human.
In a Welsh context, our unis are also vital for nation-building. A nation is that idea of an imagined community brought together by shared narratives, culture and language. All of these things are incubated, protected and developed within our academic institutions - or at least should be.
In Wales, our universities are in crisis. Thousands of jobs are being cut across the sector. The conversations I have had with those still working there have been bleak,

NIGEL FARAGE - AN APOLOGY. thecritic.co.uk/once...
NIGEL FARAGE — AN APOLOGY. Last week, I noted that since The Guardian revealed that he’d accepted a £5 million “gift” from a crypto-billionaire, the leader of Reform has carefully avoided places where people might ask him questions. In response, I find I’m now being shunned by Reform: when shame-vacuum finance spokesman Jenrick spoke on Monday morning, I was the only sketchwriter not invited.

To some journalists, the discovery that they were no longer going to have to attend events with Richard Tice would be a source of profound relief. Such hacks might take it as a compliment to have so riled the not-at-all fragile people who run Reform that they enacted petty revenge. But I am not that kind of writer. Goodness no.

So I would like to take this opportunity to say that I apologise for ever implying that Farage might be scared of questions. Quite the opposite: the leader of Reform is a giant among pygmies, a vigorously healthy man of tremendous moral and physical courage who has only

Everyone wants something done about knife crime. Everyone wants the police to learn from what happened that night. Real leaders articulate what the country feels about a tragedy, & make us feel unity of purpose in response. What they don’t do is ask how it can give them a competitive edge.

It is just the way things necessarily are. You can't have a million subtly differentiated crimes with fixed sentences, and how you draw the lines betwwen offences of different gravity is a matter of judgement. And we *reallly* can't tell juries in advance what goes to gravity
