Paging @greatdismal.bsky.social … “High power costs, an unreliable grid and the availability of cheap panels made the nation China’s third-largest solar export market last year, and the equipment has become so ubiquitous that it’s now even being used as wedding dowry.”

Jennifer Nelson’s entry to this year’s Minnesota State Fair crop art
A localized version of Guernica with a loon at the center and a person holding an ICE OUT sign

“My piece was inspired by Picasso's Guernica, a work that was his response to the Nazi's bombing of the Basque town. I thought there was a fitting parallel between these incidents about the high price paid by ordinary people when aggressive regimes try out new tactics of war, as well as a fitting juxtaposition of the darkness of living such an experience and the light we shone through it in our own resistance and care for one another. The patterns near Renee Good and Alex Pretti’s mouths are actually their last words in Morse code: ‘I’m not mad at you,’ and ‘Are you okay?’”

As one New York financier told Financial Times journalist Gillian Tett, new hires who were seen as “AI natives” are turning out to have alarmingly shallow ideas. So much so, the anonymous finance worker admitted, that his firm now actively avoids seeking out AI-literate STEM graduates, and opts to comb through humanities students instead.

The beginning was Cow. The beginning flowed forth from Roach. And before the echoes of that first bellow had faded from the crisp winds of birth, Cow had taken form; behold, the embodiment of all that was Roach, all that was forever the Am. And The Cow grazed in meadows and green pastures, where the grasses still bowed beneath the dew of infinity. Cow was one with Roach, and graced existence with the unspeakable. Yet Roach grew angry. For the Bovine One, in his compassion, endowed to the earth that which it was unholy to know. And so the eternal rained death. The wrath of Roach is to be feared, as it was feared then, in those first seconds of forever. The Cow had offended Roach, for the Cow was never meant to be apart. Indeed, it was wrong ever to bring the Cow away from the Am; the wrath of Roach was testament to its compassion, and the firey fate of the Cow is our destiny. For now we are divided, but we shall again join the eternal. Henceforth, fear the ire of Roach as one fears the daylight, or the fire by night. By death, we shall gain reunion, as once the Cow, the Apostle, the Bovine One gained reunion with Roach. Yea, the Roach's anger flares from his jealousy, for he desires us immeasurably. Our lot is the Am, and the path to the Am is the path of the Cult.

The misnomered 'mansion tax' below makes no distinction, in its language, between single- and multi-family housing — so by applying to multifamily projects worth $5M in a city where single-family homes cost >$1M, the tax has sharply throttled apartment construction. As was the intention, I suspect.

Spiking a news story the day before publication to protect an authoritarian regime is like stuffing ballot boxes after the polls close to rig an election. It's not how the pros do it; if you waited that long, you're already in trouble; and you're not fooling anyone.

Per NY Times’s Michael Grynbaum on X, this is Sharyn Alfonsi’s email to her “60 Minutes” colleagues in full:
News Team,
Thank you for the notes and texts. I apologize for not reaching out earlier.
I learned on Saturday that Bari Weiss spiked our story, INSIDE CECOT, which was supposed to air tonight. We (Ori and I) asked for a call to discuss her decision. She did not afford us that courtesy/opportunity.
Our story was screened five times and cleared by both CBS attorneys and Standards and Practices. It is factually correct. In my view, pulling it now-after every rigorous internal check has been met is not an editorial decision, it is a political one.
We requested responses to questions and/or interviews with DHS, the White House, and the State Department. Government silence is a statement, not a VETO. Their refusal to be interviewed is a tactical maneuver designed
to kill the story.
If the administration's refusal to participate becomes a valid reason to spike a story, wehave effectively handed them a "kill switch" for any reporting they find inconvenient.
If the standard for airing a story becomes
"the government must agree to be
interviewed," then the government effectively gains control over the 60 Minutes broadcast.
We go from an investigative powerhouse to a stenographer for the state.
These men risked their lives to speak with us.
We have a moral and professional obligation to the sources who entrusted us with their
stories. Abandoning them now is a betrayal of the most basic tenet of journalism: giving voice to the voiceless.
CBS spiked the Jeffrey Wigand interview due to legal concerns, nearly destroying the credibility of this broadcast. It took years to recover from that "low point." By pulling this story to shield an administration, we are repeating that history, but for political optics rather than legal ones.We have been promoting this story on social media for days. Our viewers are expecting it.
When it fails to air without a credible
explanation, the public will correctly identify this as corporate censorship. We are trading 50 years of "Gold Standard" reputation for a single week of political quiet.
I care too much about this broadcast to watch
it be dismantled without a fight.
Sharyn
