we could solve the western water crisis overnight by simply charging alfalfa farmers market rates for water
Across the basin, alfalfa hay uses more than 5 million acre-feet of Colorado River water — that's 26% of all the water consumed in the basin. One acre-foot roughly equals the annual water use of two or three households.
In the Upper Basin, irrigated agriculture consumes 2.8 million acre-feet, or nearly half the water used by Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, Wyoming, the environment, reservoirs and water exports out of the basin. Cattle-feed crops, like alfalfa, consume 90% of all water used by Upper Basin agriculture.
That means alfalfa uses more water than cities, commercial users and industries across the entire basin:
Collectively, these users consume about 3.5 million acre-feet, or 18%, of the river's water. The Colorado River

This is a poor take that suggests Owen Jones doesn't know much about Russia in the 1990s, including Russia-US or wider Russia-West relations in the 1990s. By giving only one part of the story, he is repeating the Russian political elite's self-serving line that it was all the West's fault. Long 🧵

just saw an update to this
UPDATE - FtM transgender facing two different issues at work?

BiL met the head of HR and CEO yesterday. They were super apologetic and said this should never have arisen, and that local HR and management had overstepped the mark by some way. CEO said in her view the court rulings were wrong and created a untenable position for employees, managers and service users. Local HR management are currently suspended pending an investigation, what I did not say in the original post was that she had been the one who had instigated everything and that they had had compaints in the past about her attitude to LGBTQ+ staff and service users.

At the location they have designated two toilets and changing rooms as any gender (out of six total) and the workmen started this morning to replaced the doors so that every cubicle in all teh toilets are fully enclosed. My BiL has been told that as long as no men object to him used the male facialites then he should use what he wants with the exception of the showers until they can be made fully enclosed in the male only facilaties, which might take some time.

He went back to work this morning and it was fine. His male colleagues have been fine about it and joked that he was better equiped than some of his CIS gender colleagues! Not sure about if that is appropriate workplace banter but he was happy.

I think that some people are just making mischief and the site HR manager and her boss seem to be that 'type'.

Please if you comment do not start any discussion about the rights and wrong of the court ruling, being transgender, or be derogatory about transgender people. This is not the place

Also thank to the MODs for keeping the homophobes at bay from the last post.

Screenshot of the Wikipedia page for 9/11 hijacker Mohamed Atta that reads, “ At the Hamburg University of Technology, Atta studied under the guidance of the department chair, Dittmar Machule, who specialized in the Middle East. 19] Atta was averse to modern development. This included the construction of high-rise buildings in Cairo and other ancient cities in the region. He believed that the drab and impersonal apartment blocks, built in the 60s and 70s, ruined the beauty of old neighborhoods and robbed their people of privacy and dignity.”Screenshot of the Wikipedia page for 9/11 hijacker Mohamed Atta, with a highlighted sentence that reads “He criticized how the newfangled skyscrapers and other modernizing projects disrupted the fabric of communities.”

People have no idea how bad it was. From my book The Mother of All Questions:
In 2015, Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg brought up a 1982 Supreme
Court case while hearing the case for same-sex marriage rights.
“Marriage today is not what it was under the common law tradition,
under the civil law tradition,” said Ginsburg when Justices Roberts
and Kennedy began to fret about whether the court had a right to
challenge centuries of tradition. “Marriage was a relationship of a
dominant male to a subordinate female,” she explained. “That end-
ed as a result of this court’s decision in 1982 when Louisiana’s Head
and Master Rule was struck down.”
Ginsburg, the second woman ever to serve on the Supreme Court,
was referencing Louisiana’s “head and master” law, which gave a hus-
band unfettered right to dispose of jointly owned property without
his wife’s knowledge or consent. The test case involved a husband who
mortgaged the house his wife had purchased with her earnings, to
defend himself against charges of molesting their daughter. She had
no voice in the disposal of her home, her earnings, the course of her
life; what should have been hers or theirs was his alone.

if this "well, actually..." reply to a line of tennyson's is any indication, charles babbage would have been right at home here
He commented: ‘Sir: In your otherwise beautiful poem “The Vision of Sin” there is a verse which reads – “Every moment dies a man, Every moment one is born.” It must be manifest that if this were true, the population of the world would be at a standstill. In truth, the rate of birth is slightly in excess of that of death. I would suggest that in the next edition of your poem you have it read – “Every moment dies a man, Every moment 1 and 1/16th is born.” The actual figure is so long I cannot get it onto a line, but I believe the figure 1 and 1/16th will be sufficiently accurate for poetry. I am, Sir, yours, etc., Charles Babbage.’
