I’ve been saying this for many years: the tripartite divisions of knowledge are fracturing. It was only a matter of time before the TE refused to pull math and basic science along in the Money Wagon (as represented in this slide for a talk I gave a few years ago).

Gotta wonder how much of this is an additonal, initially unmodeled (and unspoken, for obvious reasons) decline in tax enforcement capacity.

The Big Beautiful Bill cut corporate income taxes pretty substantially. Corporate tax revenues came in even lower than expected.
corporate tax revenue was at around 1.7% of GDP when BBB was enacted. Now it's down to 1.2% of GDP.

“Any kind of worker who's struggling to get their foot in the door, keep their foot in the door, get a promotion to the next thing-those are the people who are really struggling right now,” economist @betseystevenson.bsky.social explores the latest labor reports. Read: myumi.ch/qwEAG
Quote from Betsey Stevenson that reads: “What I see is a continuation of a low-fire, low-hire labor market. And that is a labor market where if you have a job, you’re doing OK. You can hang on to it, but it’s hard to get a new job. And that hurts not only the people who need to enter the labor market or have lost their job, but it actually also hurts the people who are employed because most wage gains—big wage gains—come from changing jobs.”

*polite cough* "This Nobel is Different"
a comparative line graph, showing institutional concentration of Nobel laureates from 1969 (when the rijksbank memorial prize was inaugurated) through 2022. winners in chemistry, physics, and medicine saw declines in concentration, while economics started out more concentrated than the rest, and increased in concentration (with a significant rise through the 2000s) over time

I was perhaps too loose w language - everyone dislikes bearing diffuses costs (though, being diffuse, they're less burdensome), & likes when they obtain concentrated benefits. But if everyone lobbies successfully for protection, an accumulation of diffuse costs outweighs most concentrated benefits.

Finally a proper working paper for this study that produced one of the most astounding figures I've ever seen. Basically economics is different from every other field, empirically. This paper looks at the concentration of university affiliations for award winners. www.nber.org/papers/w35875
Figure 2 from the paper: institutional concentration of university affiliation at time of award correlated with institutional concentration of phd granting university. Economics is the most concentrated of any field.
