Now that I have this travel data I am of course messing around with it further. Here’s all monthly visits Jan 2015-June 2026, smoothed. The size of the Canadian reaction to the Trump administration’s attack on them really is remarkable. Elbows up, Canada. kieranhealy.org/blog/archive...

Stephen Harper has, as we've long awaited, weighed in against Alberta separatism. But man oh man, do I have to strongly quibble with him claiming sentiment was zero when he was PM. Here's a 2014 poll putting belief in separation at 23%, which is where it sits now. nationalpost.com/opinion/step...

Worth noting: MacDonald's first attempt a establishing a Canadian Pacific Rail line STARTED in 1873 (when he and other officials were bribed as part the Pacific Scandal). Final construction wasn't completed until 1886. 13 years, not 4. Then, as now, the delays were political and regulatory.

It was AFTER Confederation, took 10 years of stop-and-start planning first, and the 1881-1885 construction phase went HALFWAY across Canada—just Ontario to B.C.—without labour standards or consideration of Indigenous people. This mythologizing of the CPR is in itself a mark of unseriousness.

It's not the biggest problem with the decline of major city newspapers in Canada, but one result is a real dearth of local sports coverage. Ottawa has a half dozen pro sports teams now, but outside of the Senators and RedBlacks, the coverage is ... very scant?

I feel like Carney could sell a GST-hike-for-income-tax-cut trade right now if it was basically revenue neutral. I think the harder/more interesting question is whether he could sell a reform that nets out to significant more revenue.
