I hate this phrasing, like it's some kind of modern trend or a matter of perspective. Columbus was a genocidal bastard. The Europeans OF HIS TIME knew it. Isabella appointed a royal commissioner to investigate rumors of his brutality and incompetence, who sent him back to Spain in literal chains.

Imagine if a daycare center only installed electrical outlet covers one at a time after a toddler shocked himself, rather than just identifying all the outlets and covering them at once. That's basically the modern US city government approach to fixing streets.

A lot of rich guys want you to think that the bar on the right is always going to be bigger than the bar on the left.
Vertical bar chart titled "Norwegian wealth tax revenue, change from 2021 to 2024," in billions of Norwegian kroner (BNOK), nominal. Subtitle: top rate 0.85% to 1.1% and stock valuation discount cut from 2022.

Two bars. "Growth with no emigration": 13.71 BNOK, a tall bar. "Lost to reform-driven emigration": 0.65 BNOK, a barely visible stub, about one-twenty-first the height.

Notes: Growth includes the rate and valuation changes and wealth growth. Net of tax that emigrants still paid, the reform-driven loss is 0.49 BNOK.

Topaz likes to lie across my mouse using arm every time I am working on something with a tight deadline. Her front paws hang over my forearm, and the rest of her body blocks the keyboard. If I try to move her, or my arm, she bites me. Also if I pet her she bites me.

Neither was the US with the British Empire. I don’t think that made much difference to the Native Americans who got massacred and ethnically cleansed. Colonialism is colonialism, even if the colony goes independent. And the British were already quite happy to support Israel militarily by the 50’s

To be frank decades is perhaps underselling - it’s been a century at least. I think it’s safe to argue that Israel is a continuation of the British colonial state, who were already using the same tactics as Israel use today. Not the first time Gaza has been leveled even

San Diego is not expendable. Our lives are not bargaining chips. The President’s words were reckless, dangerous, and a betrayal of the people he swore to protect. I love this city, and I will never stay quiet when someone treats our families, neighbors, and communities like they are disposable.
Tonight, the President of the United States stood on a stage and told a cheering crowd, “Let them take out San Diego.” He went on to call the destruction of our city “a very small price to pay.”

San Diego is home to 1.4 million people. We are workers, families, children, veterans, immigrants, sailors, Marines, and people who love this city and call it home. We are not expendable. Los Angeles is not expendable. No American city is.

For a President to speak so casually about an attack on the people he is sworn to protect is reckless, dangerous, and treasonous. At a time when American servicemembers and their families are already bearing the consequences of his war with Iran, San Diegans deserve a President focused on keeping them safe, not talking about sacrificing them.

Every elected leader in San Diego, regardless of party, should condemn these comments without qualification. There should be nothing partisan about standing up for our city and the people who live here.

Our lives are not bargaining chips.

Donald, keep our name out of your mouth.

US schools are fairly unusual in that they have their own sports teams. Likely due to them being suburban I imagine, and having room for sports facilities. Probably also the college sports $$ pipeline

I think there is a misunderstanding about how sports work in the Netherlands and outside the US more generally? Schools usually don’t have their own sports teams. Sports are at a rec center after school, so all sports are “rec leagues”. Sometimes the rec league teams are associated with pro teams
