Organic social media, where you choose what you read, is great, a powerful force for democracy When Musk, Bezos, Zuckerberg et al. control your feed, it's bad and dangerous... social platforms and AI should be nationalized and regulated

I’m very grateful for @48hills.bsky.social continuing @https://www.sfbg.com/ excellent history of covering SF’s intricate, all too often politically incestuous power structures: and these power centers’ immense consequences for San Francisco now - and in the last few decades as well as the next.

So the grieving truck driver who struck and killed a 20-year-old Haitian man was a J6-cheerleading Trump supporter, whom the Atlantic saw fit to characterize as a "lifelong Democrat"?

The far right power grab is global and entirely organized, moneyed & interconnected. No matter where it happens, every pillar of free society that falls has been and will continue to be everyone’s problem. It’s a domino effect.

What everyone has to prepare for is the constitutional crisis to accelerate if the Democrats take the House and the Senate. Vought has been allowed by the Republicans to act with impunity, so have he will continue to ignore Congress. This is why you have to impeach him immediately.

Also, more and more reports are confirming what should have been admitted for years. The Trump administration has business deals ready to go with Putin, once they can bully the Ukrainians into surrendering more of their land and people. This is the real Trump/Kushner win-win.

I'm not naive enough to actually believe this will happen, but Democrats could be preparing, right now, lists of impeachment charges against (at a bare minimum) Hegseth, Kennedy, Mullin, Patel, Blanche, & Trump, as well as Bondi, Bovino, & Noem (still worth doing!) that rely purely on public facts,

His most popular move so far was beating Cuomo and the Dem machine, and then maybe putting the Knicks games on at the bus stops Trying to belittle this man is so comical, New York is suddenly the envy of the world because the mayor is trying to help his constituents instead of billionaires

Alan Moore & Zach Rabiroff have a great line in this interview where they compare the work of history to laying bathroom tiles. Just as we use grouting to connect these tiles together, so too the historian tells a story to connect otherwise disconnected facts. flaminghydra.com/issue-619/

Scientists who comprehend the pleasures of discovery—the human part of science—are the bringers of progress, as Nobel biologist P.B. Medawar showed so entertainingly and well, back in 1969 Had a lot of fun revisiting this favorite writer for @flaminghydra.com flaminghydra.com/issue-661/
“Critical reasoning, considered alone, is barren.” One might go farther still and say that critical reasoning considered alone is not in fact reasoning at all, but a mere simulacrum of reasoning—the thinking a machine would do—empty, directionless, asphyxiatingly meaningless calculation.

Medawar’s imagination reaches beyond science with an easy, graceful consideration of Aristotle’s “poetic truth,” which “enriches or replaces scientific truth by truth of a higher kind, that which represents the testimony of a deeper and more privileged insight—a truth so lofty that, if nature does not conform to it, why then, so much the worse for nature.”Sir Peter Medawar in 1969, immaculate in a soft sack suit, he is elegantly greying, with very dark intense eyes, he is wearing a white shirt, slim tie, and a lovely watch
