There's another reason that the Bass campaign definitely wants to discredit this "outlier" poll. Crosstabs are out and "fixing streets, sidewalks, streetlights and other city infrastructure" is listed first across the board as the top priority for LA voters. Even above homelessness and crime!

Maybe more personality-disordered? He's so narcissistic that he wants to be recognized as a god who has created new life. Maybe some of the actual value of AI is a lot of us asking, 'What makes us human?' "What is a good, flourishing life?” www.newyorker.com/culture/the-...
This is not A.I. populism, as Sun describes it, so much as anti-A.I. humanism; its champions worry about what would be left if human pursuits became pointless. I was struck by how many A.I. skeptics converged on the same formulation: what is this activity for? When I called Lila Byock, a mother of two and the founder of Schools Beyond Screens, a coalition fighting the influence of big tech in schools, she said, “I think that we just need to ask ourselves, like, what is school for? What is education for? One of the really basic problems with using A.I. in education is that it is designed to make tasks easier and to reduce friction, and friction is how learning happens.”

Jenny Trinitapoli, a sociologist at the University of Chicago and one of the architects of a policy restricting A.I. and devices in the Social Sciences Core classes there, echoed Byock almost exactly. She explained that she and her colleagues regarded the A.I. rules as an opportunity to “make a positive statement about, What are we doing in these small seminar courses? What are they for? And they’re not just for graduation, right? They’re for the habits of mind that our students are going to have for the rest of their lives.” Or, as Barnes, the Catholic commentator, put it: “What, really, do I want? What really makes me happy? What is a good, flourishing life?”

Listen, @adamjentleson.bsky.social, you willfully ignorant fool. The idea that a bill that radically transforms the entire domain of energy & environmental protection should not be assessed on a single reductionist metric that hides massive fossil fuel entrenchment should not be in dispute.
Jentleson: "It’s instructive to see groups ostensibly dedicated to fighting climate change say they don’t think a bill should be judged by whether it reduces carbon emissions" quote posting an excerpt of from a leaked transcript of a call as follows: "Yeah. So we we made. We made the point that this bill should not be judged just
based on a net emissions analysis, and that that sweeps aside ecological and
community values. So there was an ask about what that. look like? So that would be a
good thing for folks to ponder as they're engaging in offices. Like, we'd like to
see… and what we… and then, so as an example, we said we'd love an assessment to…
we'd love an assessment to see what this means for public lands. You know, how many
data centers would this open the doors to? How much additional fossil fuel
development would this open the door to? How would this impact habitat quality on
public land? So focusing on that public land side of the equation and the
infrastructure that would be built on public lands. But that's that's just one
domain, you know. You could see it also with imperiled species or environmental
justice. I don't know what those analyses look like at that level. But I think
that's something that we could push."

The statement of the Cornell Center on the Death Penalty Worldwide on the botched execution of Christa Pike is worth reading in full.

CCDPW Statement on the botched execution of
Christa Pike
October 1, 2026
Christa has endured punishment greater than any other person in the history of the American death penalty. The governor must commute Christa's sentence now.
-Randy Spivey, one of Christa Pike's lawyers
Last night, the State of Tennessee recklessly and callously sought to execute Christa Pike, notwithstanding the warnings of medical experts that Tennessee's lethal injection protocol would cause her to experience agonizing pain and psychological terror. Today, Christa remains in the hospital after the State tried and failed to execute her over the course of two hours. We do not know whether she will recover and what her recovery will look like. We are heartbroken for Christa's family, friends, and her legal team for having to endure the consequences of the state's barbarity.
After she was strapped to the gurney, the execution team inserted at least seven different needles in her left arm over the course of an hour. According to Christa's lawyer Randy Spivey, one of the needles appeared to be bent as they removed it from her arm. Medical experts had anticipated these problems based on Christa's small veins and a condition called thrombocytosis. When the executioners finally inserted an IV and injected the poison, something went terribly wrong. Although they injected her with double the usual dose of pentobarbital, Christa did not die.
While some media outlets reported that she was "snoring," her attorney and others stated that she whimpered, heaved, choked, breathed deep and raspy breaths, and moved frequently. At one point she stated that she felt her arm was burning up.
Christa's lawyers demanded that the prison halt the execution, they begged the courts and the governor to intervene, and they were met with stony silence while Christa suffered. Two and a half hours after the execution process began, the prison finally called an ambulance to take Christa to the hospital, where she is receiving t…In addition, psychologist Bethany Brand testified that because of Christa's severe post-traumatic stress disorder, being immobilized on a gurney while being poked and prodded with needles would very likely trigger a flashback of her rapes. Given this, we cannot separate the deliberate cruelty of Tennessee's actions from Christa's identity as a survivor of sexual violence. We therefore conclude that the gratuitous and extreme pain inflicted by Tennessee's executioners was not only torture but was also an act of gender-based violence.
The State of Tennessee bears the blame for this injustice. Its lawyers repeatedly discredited Christa's accounts of sexual violence, calling her a pathological liar even though her rapes at the ages of 11 and 17 were corroborated by court documents, police reports, and hospital records. One month before Christa's execution, the State finally acknowledged the truth of her suffering. By then it was too late. While one court issued a temporary stay of execution to examine the State's about-face, Tennessee appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court, which vacated the stay and cleared a path for Christa's execution. In their dissents, Justices Sotomayor, Kagan, and Jackson castigated their colleagues for failing to appreciate "our own fallibility" and for risking irretrievable harm. The majority of the Court was unmoved.
While many media outlets focus on the details of Tennessee's botched execution attempt, the real takeaway of this story is the flimsiness of the legal architecture upholding capital punishment. The courts knew that Christa could face unbearable pain during her execution. They knew that being strapped to a gurney was likely to trigger a flashback to her childhood rapes. They knew that the State had invoked debunked myths about survivors of sexual violence to discredit Christa's accounts of rape, preventing a fair analysis of her trial lawyers' negligence. Yet the courts did nothing.
We recognize Christa Pike's humanity, her right to d…

The Kennedy Center has held used Steinway piano sales in the past, so AlterNet reached out to Jenny at Steinway in Washington D.C. to ask if the sale was happening again this year. She explained that it would not, as the Kennedy Center had closed.
She said the shop owner intends to retire and close, so they're selling all their pianos at a heavy discount. With the Kennedy Center closed, the shop is also moving all the Steinways to offer for sale. AlterNet asked why the Kennedy Center would need to sell everything, and she made it clear that it was because it was "closed." She
referred all other questions to the Kennedy Center.
