Indeed, precisely because such conspiracy theories around autism exist and have become mainstream, there is a massive amount of real medical science made public to explain why autism diagnoses have increased over time since the 1990s. The report instead blames it on social media, it would seem.

The review is definitely at odds with the medical literature on why the number of autism diagnoses has risen since the 1990s. In rejecting the established reason for the increase in autism diagnoses this century, the government is cutting close to some very dangerous conspiracy theories.

I grew up* in back when ADHD was considered a completely fake diagnosis invented by Americans and big pharma and/or stigmatised to the point that a diagnosis was seen as little better than a ticket to a young offenders institution. I wonder why so many people my age got diagnosed in their 30s & 40s

A fascinating editorial decision from the BBC, to make the headline a scaremongering “AUTISM AND ADHD ARE BEING OVERDIAGNOSED”, and then, four bullet points later, have the author of the report quoted as essentially saying “nah, that’s bullshit, actually”.
ADHD and autism at risk of over-diagnosis, says report, as author warns of rise in mental ill health
Summary
• An official review in England finds there is a risk of people being over-diagnosed with
ADHD and autism - three key findings from the report
• As well as neurodevelopmental conditions, the review looks at mental ill health, particularly in younger people. Our health correspondent explains the difference
• It was commissioned earlier this year after Wes Streeting, then the health secretary, said there was an "over-diagnosis" of mental health conditions
• Speaking to Radio 4's Today programme earlier, review chair Prof Peter Fonagy said Streeting was "with respect, completely wrong"

Fun to think that we had a whole inquiry into the practices and ethics of the British press and yet a newspaper can run a splash that completely inverts the findings of a major medical study, just for kicks. bsky.app/profile/chri...

Simply read this summary on what is driving the increased prevalence of mental health distress from the long awaiting final independent report into teenage mental health. Now compare it to the public discussion on mental health which basically comes down to social media and over-diagnosis.
The rise in mental distress among children and young people has unfolded alongside profound changes in the conditions of childhood. No single cause explains it. Family life, education, communities, digital environments and economic security all influence whether children feel safe and connected, have time to recover, can participate in everyday life and can look to the future with confidence.

Among the possible drivers, digital environments and educational pressures show the closest correspondence with the timing and pattern of rising distress. Neither is likely to be the principal cause. The evidence indicates that these environments have become more significant contributors than for previous generations, interacting with family circumstances, economic insecurity and existing vulnerability rather than operating alone. Continuous comparison and visible evaluation, disrupted sleep, reduced opportunities for belonging and recovery, and growing uncertainty may reinforce one another.

The strongest protective factors for mental health are supportive parenting relationships, positive educational experiences, and community participation and belonging. The pandemic, economic insecurity, pressures on families and the decline of community infrastructure do not explain the trend on their own, but they have intensified pressures and weakened sources of protection. These effects are not evenly distributed. Children experiencing poverty, discrimination, SEND, care experience or family stress often bear the greatest burden.

Prevention cannot rest solely on helping children cope with environments that place growing demands on them. It also requires action to improve those environments: more inclusive schools; protected time for rest, play and belonging; stronger community infrastructure; reduced poverty and insecurity; practical support for parents and carers; and enforceable duties on digital platforms to protect children while preserving the connection and support they can pro…

As tiresome as it is to hear Andy Burnham saying "innovation nation" over and over, it's arguably even worse to hear this talk of industrialisation. We have great, valuable export industries in the arts, TV, the BBC and higher education. All are being filleted; thousands out of work, and what for?

gorgeous framing of the idea that the increase in divorces in the 70s and later was not obviously a huge net good for society as well like no no you're right, before the 70s marriages were perfect, totally equal, the lower rate of divorce was definitely not due to massive structural disincentives-

Decided to test this for myself and Pangram told me with "high confidence"(!!!!) that sentences of a fic I wrote in literally 2018 were AI-generated
A pangram screenshot. The actual text is: To Victoria’s surprise, Alex is the first to voice his support. “Fuck it. Let’s do it,” he shrugs, standing up and striding over to the front door. Victoria raises a skeptical brow at him, but swiftly turns her gaze to the rest of the group, awaiting their responses.
“If it’s going to… for lack of a better term, eat us, no matter what… then it might be easier, psychologically speaking, to speed up the inevitable,” PupDOS agrees; and then suddenly, she smiles. Not polite, not humouring, but genuine, almost… relieved. Sazley sees the smile, and barely conceals a frown, but no one else seems to take notice. “I’m in,” PupDOS says, and she is surer than she’s been about anything of late.
Sazley is quick to follow, breaking out into an awkward grin to suppress her nerves. “I, uh, I guess this is our best shot,” she says.
Sabrina and Rebecca exchange worried glances, neither one completely confident about this plan. Both of them sit for a second, just processing the possible pros and cons of going along with Victoria’s idea. Finally, Sabrina reaches her hand over until it is resting overtop of Rebecca’s, and she leans over and whispers something in her girlfriend’s ear. Rebecca smiles a little, and then she nods.

18% of it is highlighted as AI by pangram with "high confidence": Only two spans are highlighted as AI: the end of the Sazley paragraph, "I, uh, I guess this is our best shot," she says, and the first two sentences of the next paragraph: "Sabrina and Rebecca exchange worried glances, neither one completely confident about this plan. Both of them sit for a second, just processing the possible pros and cons of going along with Victoria's idea."
