Michael Hobbes @michaelhobbes.bsky.social · 30/04/2026I really try not to drift into anti-science rhetoric because it can be conspiratorial and we need good science now more than ever but come ON. How is the field letting this shit get past peer review. 1681824 0
Michael Hobbes @michaelhobbes.bsky.social · 30/04/2026"Sliced bread" is an amazing tell here. Bread can be totally unprocessed or processed to high heaven! The fact that researchers don't seem interested in measuring the difference and can't establish the health effects is a massive problem. That's the entire concept: The processing!POTUS Speedrun Record Holder@theradiostar.bsky.socialthis is an astoundingly broad category of foods 4580069 0
Jake Wildstrom @dwildstr.bsky.social · 30/04/2026FWIW, a presliced loaf with any shelf life will need some preservatives to keep from going stale or moldy within days. But "sliced bread" = "ultraprocessed bread" is a lazy way of describing that relationship which doesn't inspire confidence that they know what they're talking about. 140 0
Sen. Pumpkin Gogurt @ugarles.bsky.social · 30/04/2026ok but "sliced bread" here means grocery store bread from major brands. it's lazy writing using an anachronistic metaphor that doesn't account for grocery stores stocking good presliced bread but i don't think it's supposed to be slippery. 2250 0
Jared 🔶 @quantumjared.bsky.social · 30/04/2026Bread actually can’t be totally unprocessed under their definition. Under NOVA, the only unprocessed foods are things like whole grains, plain meat, and veggies. Fresh homemade bread is category 3 out of 4 in their system (grinding flour and adding salt). It’s obviously total nonsense. 130 0
glacé @glacierrays.bsky.social · 02/05/2026I honestly couldn't care less how processed my bread is if it means I can buy a pack of brioche buns and they're still within date 6 weeks later without having to freeze them. Hook that processing into my veins 010 0
graydeeus.bsky.social @graydeeus.bsky.social · 01/05/2026How are you making unprocessed bread? Picking it fresh from the bread tree? Slicing clearly isn't the issue here, but bread's inherently mechanically and microbially processed wheat. 100 0

Defective Altruist (Official) @tokenwhitefriend.bsky.social · 30/04/2026In what world is any bread meaningfully “unprocessed”. You don’t cut it off the plant like that. There’s a lot of tells here about how much of this “health” panic is really just class insecurity. 2160 0

Ed Teach @realedteach.bsky.social · 30/04/2026I imagine "ultra-processed" is a fine heuristic for identifying what types of foods are likely to contain unhealthy ingredients. Greg @dttmuihm9amdrp.bsky.social · 30/04/2026Processing also covers a massive range of both harmless and detrimental practices. I hate the term as a pejorative so much. Canning foods is processing.
