Researchers found “striking biological similarities” between 5 illnesses once viewed as separate: ME/CFS, Long COVID, PTSD, Rheumatoid arthritis and MS. Despite different triggers—viral infection, trauma or autoimmune responses—they share fatigue, brain fog, poor sleep and autonomic dysfunction.
An image showing a press release or article headline from the University of East Anglia (UEA), Norwich, dated Thursday 3 September 2026.
The main headline reads: "Scientists uncover shared biology behind profound fatigue in five major illnesses."
Below the headline is a photograph of a middle-aged man with a grey beard wearing a green sweater, looking exhausted and resting his head on his hand at a desk with a laptop, a glass of water, and medication packets.
A caption at the bottom states: "The findings suggest that chronic fatigue syndrome (also known as ME), long Covid, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), rheumatoid arthritis and multiple sclerosis (MS) may be driven by common underlying mechanisms."

👀 CfP: There's still time to join our TAG Exeter session 22. Persistence through Loss: Archaeological Perspectives on Climate Adaptation and Biodiversity. Like last year, the range of work - research &/or practice based - is astounding. We want to see more! Full details: tinyurl.com/ysddk3p7
Flyer for TAG 2026 Session 22 call for papers. Title: Persisting through Loss: Archaeological Perspectives on Climate Adaptation and Biodiversity. Key Text: From soils to songs, the archaeological record and living heritage demonstrate remarkable human resilience—strategies of ‘persistence’—that have allowed communities, ecologies and landscapes to adapt to changing environmental conditions over millennia. This session aims to highlight how archaeological & heritage expertise can contribute to transformative climate action & sustainable development, using the past to secure a more resilient future. Acknowledging the entanglement of environmental, social & economic domains, this session invites contributions that interrogate the twin processes of persistence & loss from the perspective of archaeological & heritage theory & practice & the intersection of this with climate and biodiversity: past, present & future. We welcome contributions, including creative or speculative responses, that move discussions beyond simply documenting risk & damage & might include, but are not limited to: • Archaeology of Adaptation: Reflections on how past societies managed & adapted to rapid environmental changes & what these strategies offer contemporary climate adaptation. • Heritage as a Sustainer of Biodiversity: Case studies illustrating how archaeological sites & traditional land management techniques protect & encourage biodiversity. • Navigating Loss & Damage: Innovative approaches to documenting, interpreting, & communicating climate driven loss & damage within the historic environment. • Local and Indigenous Knowledge: Integrating traditional knowledge systems with science-based climate policy to build local resilience. • A Just Transition: Contemporary tensions around land ownership, climate policies, & the historic environment. • More-than-Human: How might the past inform a shift in attitudes & behaviours from human-centric to more-than-human planning & design practices?

By popular demand (well, two people asked), here are the qualification rules of the #BiscuitWorldCup
A screen shot of the rules of the Unit 5 Biscuit World Cup, which reads as follows:

UNIT 5 BISCUIT WORLD CUP – The Rules
1. Only Biscuits that are found in the biscuit aisle of a normal supermarket can enter the Biscuit World Cup
2. Weetabix are not biscuits and are not found in the biscuit aisle, and therefore cannot enter the biscuit world cup.
3. Jaffa Cakes are found in the Biscuit aisle, and therefore DO qualify for the Biscuit World Cup.
4. A sensible Biscuit Aisle. Not Aldi. A hoover is not a biscuit.
5. You may not make up biscuits (there is no such thing as a Chicken tikka digestive biscuit).
6. Crackers are crackers not biscuits, except when they are crisps.
7. Biscuits from overseas are allowed IF you can buy them in this country.
8. No homemade biscuits. This is a professional tournament.

i'd recommend people read the response from an LGBTQ+ cancer charity to last year's EHRC proposed guidance - been thinking a lot about this particular section ever since i first read it (full response here outpatients.org.uk/2025/06/26/e...)
Screenshot of article reading:
"The suggestion that transgender people should only be accommodated in side rooms is unfeasible. As anyone in healthcare knows, available side rooms are a rare commodity. If their use was mandated for all transgender patients it would largely be unenforceable. It is necessary to consider the broad variety of people who require side rooms and their availability across the NHS. As per NHS Estates documents, increased floor area, capital cost, management, and staffing issues also need to be considered. If a redrafted single-sex accommodation policy aligns with the EHRC’s Code of Practice, we feel that it could leave transgender people without reliable accommodation options, putting their clinical outcomes at risk."Quote from article
'“Let us take the example of Joelle, a trans woman who died of an eminently treatable cancer after waiting for eight days on a general ward, because clinicians could not agree whether she should be placed on a men’s ward or a women’s ward. The delay in treatment cost her her life.”

In asking archaeologists to unify over a more apolitical archaeology, you are explicitly asking marginalised archaeologists to reject parts of themselves for the sake of civility. You’re asking people who recognise injustice to remain silent. Why would I want to be in a group like that?

I’m so tired of the push for an ‘apolotical archaeology organisation’. Recognising that the discipline is inherently political and yet demanding that our organisations that represent us limit their ‘political engagement’ (which here means recognition of the genocide in Palestine!) is cowardly shit
A LinkedIn post from Professor Christian Horn which reads, “Two weeks ago, I wrote that EAA members should vote for the candidate whose vision for the Association most closely matches their own.
My vision for the EAA is an open and inclusive association that does not discriminate based on ethnicity, gender, religion, or nationality.
I also believe there should be limits to the political issues in which the EAA becomes involved. I agree that archaeology is inherently political. However, our political engagement should remain within the bounds of our profession, where our expertise genuinely applies.
Beyond our professional expertise, our opinions carry no greater authority than those of anyone else. If we allow the EAA to become a forum for debating every political issue of the day, we risk descending into the kind of polarised exchanges that dominate social media.
Anyone who witnessed the last Special Meeting will understand my concern.
Every individual member is, of course, free to hold whatever political views they choose. But within the EAA, what should unite us is our archaeological work and our profession.”
