I'll not be pretending. Pre-Lloyd Webber, stage musicals were mostly plays with a bunch of actual songs thrown in. Post-ALW they became middlebrow pseudo-opera, with none of the humour and tunes of eg Gilbert & Sullivan light opera, and none of the artistic merit of the hard stuff.

Just read @katemanne.bsky.social ‘s fantastic piece in The Cut about the Cornell rape and she points out that students protesting conditions in Gaza were treated more harshly than the rapists and holy shit, this detail
One of these students was my own advisee, and having supported her throughout the the months-long case, I can state with confidence that she did nothing wrong. Moreover, she happens to be deaf and was suspended in part for being “unreasonably loud.” Privacy consideration

pretty telling how NOT heated centrist libs are getting over this development especially since they spent the past month or so crashing out over people saying that they weren’t gonna vote for transphobic democrats.

The “Cornell 7” framing rubs me the same way described in this thread. We usually use that language for people falsely accused of crimes. Personally, I’ll be going back to “the Cornell gang rapists.”

Every person who supports a liberal "centrist" over a more progressive candidate is simply outing themselves as conservative. Trans people: I have fewer human rights today than I did five years ago. Liberal: But if I don't vote for the transphobic "centrist," *my* rights get taken away too.

For those following the Bates case in Oregon, she has agreed to a settlement opening up the process for her to be an adoptive parent despite stating that she would not affirm an LGBTQ+ child. This ADF quote says a lot about the aim of the larger project. www.lgbtqnation.com/2026/09/god-...
"A family that hunts need not give up meat eating because some children are vegans," her lawsuit, filed by the anti-LGBTQ+ hate group Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF), stated, even though no one was asking Bates to become queer or trans herself. "And Jews need not accommodate foreign gods because some children desire a home with a Hindu shrine. In the end, the only group excluded from the process up front are those with religious beliefs like Jessica's. Conservative Christians need not apply."

People don’t realize how many rights have rolled back in <2 years for some of the most vulnerable youth in the foster care and adoption systems, but it is extremely grim. A couple of years ago myself and colleagues wrote a paper outlining the decades-long playbook. This post explains the strategy.

Incidentally, this is one of the reasons it’s so hard to pull people into the fight for incarcerated people. We’re so used to appealing to people through self-interest that it’s really fucking hard to get people to respond when they can’t imagine how it will hurt them specifically. That’s a problem.

Several people are mad about this so I will briefly clarify! No, I’m not saying a novel is comparable to a real-life assault in any way. No, I’m not saying the author is bad or responsible for bad things. I am saying I’ve seen real bad stuff come from “consensual” student-faculty relationships.

for this and a number of reasons, i think the only workable "pro-AI" or even "not-anti-ai" stance is within an anti-capitalist framework, because technology, how its used, how it's developed, and how its deployed, is downstream of political economy, and the political economy *fucking sucks*

I really do think tech crossed a line at some point between "helping you do the things you want to do" on the one hand, and "helping you do the things tech wants you to do" on the other. At this point, we're all contorting ourselves to live how the tech industry thinks we should be living.

Quite a remarkable map, table, and diagram from a 1971 report on launch-on-warning, showing the implications of Soviet submarine launched ballistic missiles (SLBM) on detection, reaction, deliberation, and response time. All numbers are in SECONDS, which is what I find the most wild about it.
Map of the USA labeled "Soviet SLBM [Submarine Launched Ballistic Missile] Time of Flight to SAC [Strategic Air Command] Targets." Shows both "nominal" and "depressed" trajectories. Absolute best (north central USA) is between 580 and 850 seconds (9.6 – 14 min). Absolute worst (everywhere else) is between 320 and 650 seconds (5.3 – 10.8 min). The variations are based on where they assume the subs are launching from. Table: "Early Warning System Performance." Shows four different systems (BMEWS, OTHF, SLBM Net, and a not-yet-operational in 1971 Boost-Phase Detection Satellite) that indicates the time of detection after launch (varies between 55 and 150 seconds; BMEWS cannot detect launches as it is only over-the-horizon radar), the time that the US command and control system would be alerted after launch (ranges from 85 seconds for the newest system to 900 seconds for BMEWs), the probably of detection of a single launch (BMEWS is 99%, SLBM Net is 50%, none of the others have probabilities), probably of detection for a mass launch (all around 100%), and their false alarm rate (BMEWS has 1 per 7 years, OTHF is 1 per 6 months, the others are unknown). Diagram: "National Command-Warning to Response Cycle." Shows the consequences of a launch detection all the way through the US nuclear infrastructure, with "delay times" in seconds. Will be discussed in the next post in this thread.

"#BREAKING: Over dissents from the three Democratic appointees, #SCOTUS grants a stay in the third-country removals case; clears way for Trump admin. to continue removing non-citizens without a full chance to litigate the conditions in those countries (while also taking up the full merits appeal).

I believe fraternity hazing and military hazing and sports team hazing where men abuse each other is acclimating them into a broader culture of abuse where they will then believe it is their right to abuse other more vulnerable people. It’s so insidious. And that’s also why I think men defend it

absolutely fucking incredible news for public health in canada that a safer supply organization successfully fought the constitutionality of drug possession trafficking laws for not providing any legal way to operate. selfless life-saving work that is actually being identified and respected as such.
But in her judgment on their constitutional challenge on Tuesday, Murray concluded that a non-medicalized safer supply program is urgently needed to save lives.

And with no legal source of drugs available for such a program, and no legal "safety valves" in the CDSA that would support setting one up, she found such a program "is legally and practically incapable of being exempted."

She said part of the CDSA "unjustifiably infringes" on two parts of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, and deprives DULF members the "right to life and security of the person."

She gave Parliament six months to find a way to allow for a "pathway to non-medicalized safer supply."

As Bhatt notes, it's a reification of how the right has always propagandised about anti-discrimination law, with the false claim that it's about "special rights" for favoured minorities or somesuch tripe. The UK has actually tried to make it real. Christian nationalists are trying the same trick.

The reason this is so dangerous is that "sex-based rights" smuggles a perverse idea into the heart of the law: the idea that you should get special rights because of your immutable biology. This is the *opposite* of what civil rights law is meant to achieve.
