Happy to share new paper @ilr-rit.bsky.social on migrants in platform work. Using cross-national European data Agnieszka Piasna and I show that migrants are over-represented in ride-hailing and delivery, but not so much elsewhere. This is due to worse outside options. en.ilr-rit.org/article/pubi...

Great presentation by @katymorris.bsky.social #RC28 on local opportunities - measured by growth of high paying jobs - affecting attitudes and feeling left behind, captured here by Brexit votes. Where such jobs grew heavily the probability of voting leave was 12 pp lower than where it didn't grow.

Presentation by Yuxin Liu at #RC28 on rural to urban migration in China and Nepal. She shows that left behind children are impacted both by parents or wider family migrating, but only parental migration is associated with better educational outcomes - likely because financial means are more targeted

As the EU increasingly becomes a true single market, movements of workers over borders increase, and also become less one sided east to west. Moving for a short time to work, such as cross border work, posting, or seasonal work, is key for many industries but we often lack information on these flows

Mario Draghi: "[Growth] has been well below what could have been achieved [due among other things to] restrictive fiscal policy. This depressed growth rate has in turn lowered innovation, which then further lowered the growth rate." We are all (post)Keynesians now! cepr.org/publications...

Policy Insight 137: Europe: Back to Domestic Growth
On 15 December 2024, Mario Draghi spoke at a dinner hosted by CEPR, in association with its 3rd Paris Symposium, about his recently published report on the future of European competitiveness. Domestic growth in Europe has been well below what could have been achieved in recent years, due to factors such as lack of progress in removing barriers within the single market and restrictive fiscal policy. This depressed growth rate has in turn lowered innovation, which then further lowered the growth rate. Maintaining the current EU social model will be costly and such low growth rates cannot support this. Draghi speaks eloquently about the structural reforms and large scale investments needed within Europe to improve the situation.
