Landed! Just keep it small. You'll make it, but you'll have to deal with some annoying looks from the crew when boarding (I guess it's all part of the performance).

My biggest concern about ECSR Dublin is whether Ryanair will allow me to travel with my A1 poster tube without paying an extra fee. Any recommendations or past experiences you're willing to share?

I see a growing share of postdoc vacancies in quantitative sociology requiring knowledge of the local language, even when there's no teaching or qualitative work involved. I don't know ahout the reason, but it's not good for internationalization. Especially with AI erasing language barriers.

Pro tip: if you're going to write to a journal editor asking why your manuscript doesn't have a decision yet, it's best to ensure that you haven't declined every review request from that journal for several years. Where are we meant to get reviews (& thus timely outcomes), if not from you??

Do waitresses receive the same occupational prestige as waiters? Using German gendered occupational titles, we find that feminine job titles receive slightly lower prestige than masculine ones, especially among male-domindated occupations. Out now in Social Forces. doi.org/10.1093/sf/s...

These equivalence requirements & associated costs are ridiculous, and put extra burdens on young scholars. Something similar happened with my IT habilitation, for which my experience at a NL graduate school accredited by the Dutch Royal Academy of Science did not count as not approved by IT ministry

In April I applied for 3 vacancies in 2 universities in Spain. I found out I'm excluded from the selection process because my Swiss PhD title is not automatically recognized. This happens in *most* (not all) universities. These closure processes impose a penalty on those who went abroad to study

Today we had an appointment with the cardiologist of our dog. I made the most basic graph and tables with the breathing rate before and after treatment started. She "loved" the graph and said it was "amazing" I'm feeling at the peak of my career. This is the kind of reviewer I need for my papers
Graph with title "Daily average breathing pre-treatment (t-k) to post-treatment (t+k)" showing a clear decrease when the treatment starts

With conscription again under debate, @ivancanzio.bsky.social and I examined how conscription was institutionalized across 18 European countries and assessed how its suspension was associated with men’s early-career occupational placement.
Title page and abstractTable comparing conscription policies across 18 European countries, including suspension year, cohort exposure, service rates, conscientious objection, and service duration.
Coefficient plot showing positive associations between having served in the military and later work in armed forces, skill/license-related, and male-dominated occupations.
Difference-in-differences coefficient plot showing modest negative estimates of conscription suspension on men’s work in armed forces, skill/license-related, and male-dominated occupations.

Great to see our scoping review from the ERC-funded TARGET project published! The field has mainly looked at the drivers of discrimination attributions in isolation, and with little attention to between-respondent heterogeneity. We call for multi-dimensional designs and multi-actor comparisons.

During my time in Konstanz I had to work with a unique - but extremely limited - dataset about children's physical activity. Quite a challenge for me because I do employment research and children (usually) don't work. So, I tried to think of sports like I did for occupations 🎾🚴‍♂️💃🏂⚽🏃 (thread)
Abstract:Participation in sports during childhood and adolescence is typically segregated by gender, with girls and boys frequently engaging in different types of sports. This segregation has broad negative consequences, particularly for children who participate in sports that are not predominant within their gender. Qualitative studies indicate that parents play a crucial role by either supporting or hindering their children's engagement in gender-typical and gender-atypical sports; however, little is known about the influence of specific parental attributes. We argue that parental physical activity (PA) exerts a gendered influence on children's participation in gender-(a)typical sports, and that parents with high education promote children's engagement ingender-atypical sports. We test these hypotheses using a large dataset of children and adolescents in Germany (N = 9,224). Overall, we find that parental PA exhibits the expected gendered association: boys are more likely to practise (only) male-dominatedsports when only their father does PA, and girls are more likely to practise (only) female-dominated sports when only their mother does PA. Regarding parental education, we find limited support: boys with highly educated parents are less likely to participate (exclusively) in gender-typical sports, whereas no such pattern is observed for girls. We discuss the broader implications and limitations of our findings

With fake generations shortened (because they keep rushing out the next for marketing purposes), and age of parents increasing, it's more common for families to skip a fake generation than double up (as when a million boomer parents had boomer kids). The important point is: these are not generations
