Back in my day the reason we made Eng students take humanities courses was to prove that they weren’t functionally illiterate. Where did this civic virtue stuff come from lol

Fundamentally the best comparison for Pierre is probably someone like Nikki Haley (especially given that like, being neoconservative on Venezuela was quite literally in the 2025 CPC platform, lmao)

for a banal example, the fact that anthropic will simultaneously publish long diatribes about the risks of AI surveillance and then contract out Claude for Palantir to resell to CBP is psychotic, and there is no reason why i should take any of their moral protests seriously while they do that.

Wow. We couldn't reach a deal with the country that we already have a deal with. So tariffs are increasing, including on some things that already had tariffs despite the earlier agreement? Well, who's to say which side is to blame. Probably one of those "both sides" things I hear so much about.

Sorry, but we’re going to have to lock the word genocide away now. People simply cannot be trusted with it.
Briahna Joy Gray O @briebriejoy

Talking about Luigi as a "killer" without mentioning the tens of thousands of deaths Brian Thompson was responsible for is manufacturing consent for corporate genocide.
The problem with cops is their selective enforcement of crime. It's about protecting monied interests. Not you.

Increasingly think we need a ‘modernity is actually good’ political tendency. the right is putatively pro-industry and economic growth but thinks science is gay and wants to throw out vaccines for essential oils, the left putatively believes science but also embraces crank degrowth NIMBYism

What exactly is the point of Warren anymore? Her economic team that staffed Bidenworld was a massive failure, Fight Club almost tanked the chances of winning the senate this cycle with Plat, and now she can’t even say “The evil guy debased himself” Nothing left but vanity.

Anyway, I think this is kind of downstream of my theory that a lot of these folks who are defending Platner are a) bitter that they’re not working in like real newsrooms and b) know the path forward is to find some sort of heterodox backer, like a less crazy version of the guy who bankrolled Dreher.

The cherry on the sundae is that she's a policy wonk for Heritage, so getting this sort of coverage is part of her job, but it also speaks to how the NYT's culture pieces are basically, 'journalist interviews their friend in the same elite circles.'

To prove racial gerrymandering, a plaintiff has to draw race-blind districts that are just as favorable to Republicans. But that's impossible to do because Republicans uniformly select racists as their candidates and Black voters won't vote for racists. So racial gerrymandering is always allowed.
Callais updated these standards. As relevant here, weheld that for plaintiffs to satisfy the first Gingles precondi-tion, a plaintiff ’s alternative map “must meet all the State’slegitimate districting objectives” “just as well” as the State’sown map. 608 U. S., at ___ (slip op., at 29) (emphasisadded). Those legitimate districting objectives, we held, in-clude “the State’s specified political goals” and “any othergoal not prohibited by the Constitution.” Ibid. A plaintiffalso “cannot use race as a districting criterion” in preparingthe alternative map.
